Orkidea is one of the true masters of Trance.
Outside of the uplifting melodies, the pulse-pounding bass lines of Psy, and the trance-inducing synchronicity of tech, there is an under-appreciated aspect of the trance genre we all love and celebrate…Progressive. Fortunately, one of the masters will be on hand this year to take us on an incredible journey.
A bannerman for the Pure Trance movement spearheaded by Solarstone, Orkidea plays it as pure as it gets.
While he has the ability to throw the hardest set you can imagine, he tends to play sets that fall into the lower BPM of the Trance range, slowly building up over the course of his entire set instead of constantly taking you to the edge and backing off.
The Finnish superstar has an unrivaled ability to start a set in an almost atmospheric style, and by the end having you jumping up and down to his pulsing bass and synths.
However, as amazing as he is as a DJ, what really sets him apart is his own personal library.
There is something about the songs that Orkidea creates that scream composition. As a testament to his musical genius, everything he creates is so incredibly layered. Multiple listens expose elements of the songs you didn’t even realize were there.
Combined with the way he effortlessly mixes from one track to another, he weaves a symphony of aural transcendence that both pauses time and space and yet leaves you feeling like an hour isn’t nearly long enough when the set is over.
As an example, I propose my number one track by Orkidea, “p:Machinery”.
A slow startup, some primal technical sounds, and a small amount of bass that gives into one of my absolute favorite bass lines of all time.
Meaty and chunky. Dirty and technical. Almost what some people these days would call “filthy”, and yet the song remains littered with melody and ambiance that keeps it from descending into repetition.
There is a hint of unintelligible vocals with the build-up, and then the roller coaster ascends the top of the lift and you’re off to the races. This song is such a perfect example of what to expect from a set by Orkidea. A constant progression towards an expected release, followed by a constant spiral or euphoria.
Now, I can’t deny, I am a fanboy, and this entire article is written through the eyes of a fanboy. But as someone who has loved the trance life for over a decade, I promise you. Orkidea will deliver.
As an example of a performance Orkidea can deliver, I offer up his set from Transmission from 2016, which was an incredible journey.
