Spencer Brown stays focused on the Silver Linings in life and achieves a personal dream, landing on Sasha’s Last Night On Earth!

For Anjuna staple Spencer Brown and the rest of the world, the pandemic provided a crushing blow to the spirit. But, it’s during times like these that we all have a choice – look to the silver linings and push forward or fall victim to the storm. Spencer Brown chose to hold on tight and ride it out, using lockdown as a catalyst to explore every crevice of his musical interests while embracing and practicing self-acceptance. And so, out of spirit and studio came the Silver Linings EP.

While this isn’t the first time that Spencer Brown made an impression on Sasha’s Last Night On Earth, remixing “Geb” by Dubspeeka, this marks his first original on the imprint and speaks to the hopeful dreamer that lies within. If you take a look at some of his work like Illusion Of Perfection and Stream Of Consciousness you can clearly see that this man’s imagination runs wild and deep, harnessing mind-bending concepts and flinging them out to the world cloaked in the sweet rhythm of the night. Silver Linings hits on the same wavelength but comes with subtle vibrations packed with powerful musical imagery.

Silver Linings EP was entirely written during the lockdown. I’m a big fan of atmospheric, more experimental progressive, and techno, and lockdown provided me with the time to experiment in this vein of production. Once I wrote Cumulonimbus Incus (named after the soaring feeling of my favorite cloud) and Sea Caverns (named after the sonar pulse and deep-sea bass), I sent the music to Sasha, one of my biggest inspirations. I’m absolutely honored that he loved the music, and Last Night on Earth was the perfect fit for these sounds. While these were written in a dark place during the lockdown, getting signed by one of my heroes turned out to be a silver lining of endless studio time.

I begin my own Silver Linings experience in the grand care of the “Cumulonimbus Incus.” Dancing atop this exploding marshmallow in the sky, I’m hypnotized by the slightly dissonant clink and clang of the wind chimes. Suddenly, a bold festive drum pattern sends shockwaves through my system, and for a second I lose my balance. Of course, Spencer sees the fall coming and he uses the brisk tempo to grab hold of my feet as I sway to the soft and breezy character flip. I could live on this cloud forever.

From sky to sea, I plummet into the deep to explore the “Sea Caverns.” This tune features the vocal stylings of Wilt Claybourne and begins with a haunting sonar blip. I imagine floating around in a submarine as whales pass by in curiosity. The experimental soundwaves and tribal chant send chills through my spine as I travel further into the cavern. Now fully engulfed in the darkness, I let my eyes adjust, and find alien-like sea creatures peering through the window and into my soul.

Now that creativity is firing on all cylinders, it’s your turn to explore! Grab your copy of Silver Linings on your favorite music platform, stream the EP below, and let us know what you think in the comment section!

Maria first fell in love with electronic music in the early 2000's when she heard a little tune called "Satisfaction" by Benny Benassi. Since then she has dived headfirst into the scene and is wildly passionate about the trance, techno, and house genres. Festival's like EDC, Dreamstate, and Dirtybird Campout hold the key to her soul and dance music will always and forever be a major part of her life.
