SampliFire masterfully brings together the Norse culture of the Vikings with bass music on his Loki EP, out now on Disciple Round Table!
SampliFire has been around in the dubstep scene since 2013. His aggressive sound paired with pristine production quality has made him a fan favorite over the years. The result of this has been widely successful songs for this innovative and forward-thinking producer, such as last year’s Soul EP along with the debut into his new “Vikingstep” sound with “Berserker.”
Continuing to explore more into this new sound which is heavily influenced by the Norse culture of the Vikings, SampliFire has unleashed his Loki EP on the world. The Vikings are predominantly associated with being a tough and brutal culture of the 8th Century, so what better sounds to pair them with than with the sounds of SampliFire’s style of bass music. Additionally, he taps his friends Ivory and Akeos to lend their talents to the EP, which adds even more fun into the mix!
If you have not gotten a chance to immerse yourself in the world of SampliFire’s new-age of Vikingstep, you should absolutely check his Loki EP. SampliFire kicks off the EP in grandiose fashion with his ode to the hero “Sigurd”!
As you dive into the Loki EP, you can’t help but notice each track has a very specific Norse name. That is not by coincidence, but by choice. SampliFire truly elevated the listening experience by grabbing artifacts from the Viking culture and sprinkling them throughout this EP.
The first of which is the intro track, “Sigurd,” which plays on Norse mythology and the legend of Sigurd killing a dragon. The track starts off with a cinematic soundscape which reminds me of a scene of Viking ships coming across the horizon. It sets the stage for the rest of this electrifying track. You can’t help but jump out of your chair as the bass notes and intricate synths take over your body.
“Harald” sees SampliFire team up with fellow French producer IVORY. The two have teamed up in the past to create monstrous tunes, and this one is no different. SampliFire continues with the cinematic intros on this one, and from the build to the three varying drops of the track, it’s a stomper of a tune that embodies the might of the Vikings.
Everything leads up to the title track “Loki”, which brings varying elements and instruments from Norse culture together on a god-tier bass anthem!
“Loki” is the climax of this EP, which is fitting since it is the title track. It begins with notes from an ominous, dark cello called a tagelharpa – a Norse instrument that SampliFire previously used on “Berseker.” This instrument is a constant throughout the track and adds such a beautiful, yet eerie element to it. Arguably, this track is SampliFire at his finest – the immaculate layering of all of the bass noises on the drop paired with the driving force of the drums is undoubtedly going to make this a fan favorite.
Akeos links up with SampliFire to provide a festival-ready tune with “Raid.” The high-energy paired with Akeos’ signature riddim sound makes it hard to not imagine this song played at your favorite bass show. It’ll have you grabbing the rail in your living room, no doubt!
“Baldr” brings the entire EP home in a spectacular fashion. SampliFire truly flexes his creativity with the cinematic masterpiece he provides throughout this track. Everything blends into one another as the track takes listeners on a sonically appealing journey that is still full of complex bass sounds but also has this sense of peace around it. It provides an epic ending to this phenomenal EP.
