What comes to mind when you hear the word, Subculture? Subculture is defined as a cultural group within a larger culture, often having beliefs or interests at variance with those of the larger culture. In the world of trance, the idea of subculture holds special value to the next DJ on the Dreamstate lineup. Hint hint: he loves the idea of subculture so much that he named his record label and radio show after it. Do you know who I am talking about? Let’s get to know a little bit about the trance legend…… John O’Callaghan!
Irish born John O’Callaghan first emerged onto the scene in 2003 when he played on national Irish radio station 2FM’s Session Tour, broadcasted on New Years Eve. From that day on, there was no denying that he had plans to keep on creating music for the world. Releasing productions on Discover, a label set up by John Askew, John O’Callaghan began to deliver the fire. Soon he would release tracks on Armada and the now famous, “Big Sky” was born. In 2007, “Big Sky” would be named the tune of the year on A State of Trance. In addition to “Big Sky”, John’s track “Find Yourself” would soon find itself listed as a future favorite on ASOT. This set the pace for what John’s future career would look like, and along the way he would release 2 more monster tracks respectively called “One Special Particle” and “Exactly”. Today, he is still delivering the heat and staying true to his trance roots. John has achieved this most notably through the development of the Subculture label and radio show.
With his record label and radio show continuing to inspire and impress the trance world, John O’Callaghan could certainly claim the title of an electronic dance music master. Touring the world with his multi dimensional beats, filled with classic trance melodies yet forward thinking style, JOC (as many of us know him by) is a DJ that should not be overlooked. His sets are captivating, refreshing, exciting, and full of music that stays true to the trance dynamic but keeps the dance floor pumping with energy. He will not disappoint at Dreamstate and if you need proof, check out this set from Subculture New York:

John O’Callaghan 2016 Update:
So what has the trance legend John O’Callaghan been up to this past year? Let me first start off by saying that if you haven’t had the opportunity to listen to his set from Dreamstate SoCal 2015 then I would advise you check it out immediately by clicking right here! John O’Callaghan may have delivered the most uplifting and transcendent set of the weekend and he certainly deserves a shout out for that alone.
Now that that’s out-of-the-way let’s dive in and explore some late happens from the great JOC. Most recently, John O’Callaghan wowed the planet with an epic set at the famous Transmission event in Prague and is gearing up to head to a very special event called Digital Society & John O’Callaghan presents Subculture at the O2 Academy in Leeds. Aside from these major events, JOC has worked vigorously in the studio and just this past month “The Forging Of Steel” hit the airwaves, sending a powerful shock wave through the trance universe. Earlier this year the guru of trance stunned his fans with his brand new track called “Lies Cost Nothing” featuring Clare Stagg; a track that quickly found itself on the track lists of the biggest names in the industry and one that will go down in history as a trance classic.
So with a couple of epic new tracks under his belt and some major grinding on the tour circuit, John O’Callaghan is primed and ready to let loose at Dreamstate SoCal for the second year in a row. How will he trump last years performance? We will just have to wait and see! I have no doubt in my mind that whatever he has in store will change the game once again and raise that bar a few notches higher for all who come after him. Come find me front and center!
