French electronic duo Parallelle takes listeners on an expedition across diverse soundscapes in their latest EP, A Day in Asia Pacific.
For those seeking a sonic exploration of the Asia Pacific region, look no further than French duo Parallelle’s latest EP, A Day In Asia Pacific. This release is an expertly crafted project that offers a front-row seat to the myriad of cultural sounds across the world. Now based in Amsterdam, the multi-talented brothers Julien and Thomas De Bie wear many hats – both as owners of their label Klassified Music and prolific artists renowned for their artful fusion of organic recording and a global exploration of diverse musical genres.
After their first two releases, A Day in “Essaouira” and “Real de Catorce,” the duo continues to extend their geographic reach. This time, they venture into the Asia Pacific to bring the listeners across enchanting landscapes such as Fiji, Java, Bengaluru, Osaka, and Bangkok. Through an eclectic mix of genres spanning house, minimal techno, and breaks, A Day In Asia Pacific celebrates the exquisite cultural sounds of multiple locations, each brought to life by dynamic collaborations with local artists.
First, the rich sounds of “Fiji” in the opening track feature indigenous melodies and rhythmic percussions inspired by the traditional Kava Ceremony in Navala Village. The brothers ventured upstream to the rivers of Pacific Habor to create a perfect recipe of smooth, rolling rhythmic patterns from the traditional Fijian melodies. Together with the local Sabeto Choir, they offer a genuine soundscape of Fiji’s deep heritage that transcends any sort of language barrier in this sonic treasure.
Next, “Java” takes listeners into the heart of Indonesia. Parallelle teams up with Anon Suneko and Shanty to enchant the listeners with the expressive melodies in this track. Greeted by the warm smiles and genuine hospitality of the local people during their expedition, Parallelle captures the vibrant colors of the diverse flora through the lavish textures of this gem – characterized by unique timber and interlocking rhythms.
Not forgetting South Asia, Parallelle’s musical voyage in India saw them taking on the streets of “Bengaluru,” where the band dove into the traditional sounds of Carnatic music. After watching the Chik Callapur musicians play the Nadaswaram, Thavil (percussion), and learning about the Yakshagana dance, Parallelle hopped on the opportunity to team up with Kollalu Venkatesh on this vibrant track. Almost akin to a percussive heartbeat of South India, the folk-like rhythms and experimental beats capture a sound that mirrors the traditional-meets-modern spirit of the bustling metropolis.
The band’s globetrotting journey continues with the track “Osaka.” They began their journey in the scenic Minoo Park, renowned for its tranquility and serene landscape, before turning their attention to the bustling city center. Beyond taking in the picturesque view, they embraced the nuances of the local sounds – skillfully mastering the techniques of the Shamisen (three-stringed Japanese musical instrument) with expert guide Kaoru Kiyama and engaging in collaborative jams with the Japanese band TRA Innovation.
Finally, the last track opens the doors to an enchanting world of “Bangkok.” From a Thai Boxing training session to a children’s music school excursion, Parallelle experienced the authenticity of local life through this cultural immersion. In a jamming session with Nisatiwa, they expressed the rich traditional sounds of Thai music through this blend of classical elegance and folk vibrancy.
Even with your eyes closed, this EP will instantly whisk you across the globe to experience first-hand the electricity of each city the track is named after.
