Liquid Stranger drops DIMENSIONS, yet another mind-shattering release on WAKAAN that unifies old and new bass sounds alike.
WAKAAN label head Liquid Stranger has become a force to be reckoned with in the scene over the years with prominent live performances and stunning releases. This year saw him deliver some much-needed BALANCE to the scene with his latest album, which is still circulating heavily on streaming services, while the return of WAKAAN Music Festival also helped him deepen his grip on the community. Now, after embarking on the DIMENSIONS tour last month, Liquid Stranger gives his fans a few more banging spacey tunes with his latest body of work, the four-track EP that bears its name.
Liquid Stranger manages to display his familiarity with high-quality production in every song on DIMENSIONS, taking the sound from the previous works in his discography and integrating it with more contemporary electronic elements. In “Deep Space,” listeners are taken to an interdimensional realm with choppy alien elements and using small intervals to convey a futuristic sound. The bright, somber melody on this track provides contrast to the stabby percussion and jumpy synths for added effect.
The second track on the EP, “Extraterrestial,” features Crooked Bangs and offers a more upbeat, melodic side of his production. Swinging drums and bright synth arpeggiations present a very pleasant introduction, which then blasts off into outer space with an almost trappy alien synth stab paired with squelching bass.
“Misfits” is a highly anticipated collaboration with longtime friend and labelmate Sully and brings a plethora of reverberating low-end beats, cinematic bass, and more choppy synth effects. Highly altered vocal effects are joined by drums in the transition section of the tune before returning to ripping bass. It serves as a good balance to the final tune on the EP, “Green Light” featuring Yana Mahal, which is a space-gangster ballad with clear ragga energy and pitch-modulated synth leads. The bass in this tune is especially downturned and fills the floor.
