What was your first electronic music event?
My first electronic music event was actually a festival in the streets of San Francisco. The festival was called LovEvolution and I went in 2009! It was formerly known as LoveFest and originated from Berlin’s LoveParade. It was the first time I saw deadmau5 and it was so surreal being exposed to the electronic dance music scene in the streets of San Francisco right near City Hall.
What/who influenced you to attend your first event?
I started dating this girl in my junior year of high school and she was the one who initially exposed me to artists like Kaskade and deadmau5. I was immediately hooked and completely fell in love with all the nuanced sounds. I was skateboarding with some friends in San Francisco and on that day, she told me she was going to LovEvolution and I decided to meet her there!
What is one moment from an event that was special and why?
Without a doubt, the one event I always think of is the day Kyle Watson came to Halcyon in San Francisco. It was on March 17 this year and it was absolutely perfect. I have been a huge fan of Kyle Watson for a little over two years now. I had been dying to see him, but he didn’t have his US Visa so I had little hope for myself.
I remember when Kyle Watson finally got his VISA sorted (s/o Billy Kenny) and he posted a status about where he should tour I forward it to the owner of Halcyon who is actually a dear friend of mine. He played the most amazing set and completely blew me away. Luckily, I was also able to meet him and give him a watermelon plushie! [Laughs]
What is your favorite festival or event?
The festivals that are in consideration for this are CRSSD, Lightning in a Bottle, Dirtybird Campout, and Holy Ship. If I had to pick, I would choose Lightning in a Bottle simply because it was the festival that allowed me to really blossom. I attended for my first time in 2017 and it was during that festival that I understood the value of my own self and that I didn’t need anyone to come to certain sets with me and I cherished my own independence.
What is your favorite electronic song and why?
This is a tough one to answer. To be honest, I have many favorites simply because there’s such a large array of artists with incredible sound productions. Although, there is one song that stands above the rest and it’s called “Bambro Koyo Ganda” by Bonobo.
I love the song because of the beautiful percussion instruments coupled with the voices of Innova Gnawa. It’s such a mesmerizing track and it’s honestly such an epic track. I feel it’s a purging of the soul.
Who are your favorite artists?
I have too many haha! To list some: Kyle Watson, Billy Kenny, Waker & Royce, Odesza, Rufus, Franklyn Watts, Jamie xx, Justin Martin, Chris Lake, Chris Lorenzo, AC Slater, and Bonobo.
What are your favorite genres?
House, tech-house, deep house, dance, trap and I also like indie music!
What do you feel your “Identity” is in the electronic music community?
I feel that my “identity” is someone that is a taste-maker, curator and a catalyst for things to happen. I like to meet lots of people and get a feel for what they do / what they like and steer them to the right direction or right people! I want everyone to have a good time.
Is there anything else you would like to add about yourself for the readers?
I actually have my own website where I feature artists, photographers, videographers, promoters and more! My goal is to use the website as a platform for people of any background to showcase their work and give them more exposure!
Check it out – I feel that my “identity” is someone that is a taste-maker, curator and a catalyst for things to happen.
