#TBT || Linkin Park x Steve Aoki – A Light That Never Comes

Linkin Park x Steve Aoki A Light That Never Comes

As we mourn the loss of Chester Bennington today, we’re looking back to the year 2013 with Linkin Park’s collaboration with Steve Aoki.

For those of you who may be unaware, on July 20 Linkin Park vocalist Chester Bennington was found dead in his home in California. Having struggled with his own internal issues over many years, he tragically chose to take his own life. Chester left behind his family, friends, and many fans who had fallen in love with his music over the past two decades. So for this week’s #TBT we’re bringing you “A Light That Never Comes”, a collaboration between Linkin Park and Steve Aoki that was released back in 2013.

While they definitely are classified under the genre Nu Metal, Linkin Park was one of the first bands that I listened to when exploring music on my own. They were an exciting blend of hip hop and rock, with some DJ work in there too. It was such a unique sound for me to experience, and I fell in love with their music through their first two albums Hybrid Theory and Meteora. I listened to their music all of the time, and the tracks on those two albums still contain lyrics I can sing back at a moment’s notice today.

Linkin Park wasn’t just a rock band to me though, they were also helped shaped me to become who I am today. I would definitely say that without their collaboration with Jay-Z on Collison Course I probably never would have developed a large passion for hip hop and mash-ups. That passion ended up leading me to electronic music, and for that, I cannot thank Linkin Park enough.

Throughout his career, Chester made his mark on many memorable tracks that Linkin Park put out like “Crawling”, “Numb”, “Somewhere I Belong”, “One Step Closer”, and “In The End”. While those were just some of my personal favorites, his vocals permeated the albums the band released and set the stage for what many other vocalists attempted to replicate later on.

Over the years my passion for rock waned, but my memories of Linkin Park never faded away. I still listen to their first two albums quite often, and there is nothing better than letting out some pure emotion to their powerful lyrics. Back in 2013,  they collaborated with Steve Aoki to create track “A Light That Never Comes”. The track was released for their game hosted on Facebook but was also included on their album Recharged. The track also received remixes from other notable DJs like Coone, Angger Dimas, and Vicetone. Take a listen below, and look back on the career of one of the most beloved vocalists to come from the rock scene at the turn of the century.

RIP Chester Bennington (March 20, 1976 – July 20, 2017)

Linkin Park x Steve Aoki – A Light That Never Comes – Lyrics:

Nah, you don’t know me
Lightning above and a fire below me
You cannot catch me, cannot hold me
You cannot stop, much less control me
When it rains, it pours, when the floodgates open brace your shores
That pressure don’t care when it breaks your doors
Say it’s all you can take, better take some more

‘Cause I know what it’s like to test fate
Had my shoulders pressed with that weight
Stood up strong in spite of that hate

Night gets darkest right before dawn
What don’t kill you makes you more strong
And I been waiting for it so long

The nights go on
Waiting for a light that never comes
I chase the sun
Waiting for a light that never comes

Oh
Oh
Oh
Waiting for a light that never comes

When I was young, they told me, they said
Make your bed, you lie in that bed
A king can only reign ’til instead
There comes that day it’s “off with his head”

The night gets darkest right before dawn
What don’t kill you makes you more strong
You’ll have my mercy then when you’re gone

The nights go on
Waiting for a light that never comes
I chase the sun
Waiting for a light that never comes

Oh
Oh
Oh
Waiting for a light that never comes

And I told them, nah, you don’t know me
Lightning above and a fire below me
You cannot catch me, cannot hold me
You cannot stop, much less control me
When it rains, it pours
When the floodgates open, brace your shores
That pressure don’t care, it breaks your doors
Say it’s all you can take, better take some more

Oh
Oh
Oh
Waiting for a light that never comes

The nights go on
Waiting for a light that never comes
I chase the sun
Waiting for a light that never comes

Oh
Oh
Oh
Waiting for a light that never comes.
