Time to dive head first into the electro realm with a Congorock track that will shake you right out of your dancing shoes!
This week I wanted to show some love to a track that was once one of my all time favorite festival bangers, Congorock’s “Ivory”, released back in 2011 on Ultra Music! Known during his ‘Babylon’ era for his implementation of some seriously unique electro beats, the crunchy synths on this track send a shock wave straight through the soul with layers of sound that feel heavy and mysterious. In 2012, “Ivory” would be picked up for the remix treatment and the “Ivory Remixes EP” was released out into the world, including some unique spins on the original from Laidback Luke, The Bloody Beetroots, Mumbai Science and NT89. “Ivory” is a track that explodes through the speakers and one that absolutely blew my mind when I first heard it on the festival level when both Congorock and Laidback Luke dropped it during their respective sets at TomorrowWorld 2013. The experience felt like a musical earthquake. As the blaring alarm swept over the dancefloor, I imagined being in a primitive jungle community and suddenly we were being warned of an impending catastrophe! But, instead of ducking for cover and running for our lives, the answer to the call would be to dance harder than we have ever danced before in our lives!
Another reason that makes this track so special is that it is paired with a music video that, in true electronic dance music fashion, leaves you guessing about the director’s vision. It opens with an older man speaking inspirational words to a young boy. He says, “This is life. This is what we all talk about. It’s beautiful. There is nothing better than something like this.” Suddenly we are taken to a run down room where the young man downs a beer and lights up a smoke, with a feeling of introspection and sadness. You can almost feel his turmoil through the somber expression written all over his face. Ingesting what seems to be some sort of drug, we follow the young man as he watches life go by, facing an internal struggle that is never truly defined, but somehow I feel that it surrounds the topic of life, survival, and death. The music video is very creative, leaving its plot open to interpretation and leaving you begging to know more about this young man’s back story.
