Khiva produced a collection of tunes with earth-shaking bass and soothing vocals in the Heavenly Bodies EP on Deep, Dark & Dangerous.
Khiva has become an artist who brings the house down every time she releases new tracks. Her one-of-a-kind sound of dropping effortless lyricism in the form of singing or rapping along some classic deep dubstep basslines has garnered recognition. Tunes like “Feel It Out,” Misplaced Apathy,” and “Float” from her previous works show only the surface of what Khiva brings to the table in her creative ways. In 2022, Khiva updated her musical realm with quite an impressive showcase of releases, from the stylistic Fever EP to the lyrically elevated Phantom Forces EP. Now, she’s dropped what has been brewing in the cauldron all year, the Heavenly Bodies EP.
Heavenly Bodies levels up her original sound with even more introspective, clever lyricism and an intensive listening experience with her most advanced production techniques to date. The five-track EP includes tunes that delve into mountains and valleys of vocal styles, various instrumental techniques, and smooth drum patterns that stay dedicated to the album’s overall theme.
“Prophetic Silence” – an ode to her previous track, “Prophetic Violence” – introduces the listener to Khiva’s haunting vocals that align atop a mystical, minimalistic backtrack with an impressive rhythmic entity to act as a smooth yet enchanting start. “Ephermeral” hits a heavier tone that Khiva is well-versed in, jumping straight into the depth caves of Hyrule with dark, gritty synths on a catchy bassline, paired with some haunting vocal samples of a spell-casting tone.
Another one of the outstanding tracks from the EP is “Rapture,” with its cinematic choral effect that takes a hard right and drops the listener into a soundscape of dub, with panning samples and a classic bass tune. There are so many different auditory stimulations in this song that it can take a few listens to focus on one element, but the overall story of the track is brought to life when put together.
The final track, “Satellite (Bones & Ice),” is a classic take on Khiva’s poetic talent in vocal rhythm and range, switching from a catchy rap hook to a ballad-like chorus. The journey this song takes embodies the symbol of the whole EP, with many different production techniques such as rhythmic layering, sample isolation, and vocal manipulation, as well as a jazzy undertone that makes this track a listening experience in itself any audiophile can get lost in.
Each track on the Heavenly Bodies EP glides into each other but has the strength to be standalone tracks with different stories as well – the theme of transcendence and connecting to the power within are seen within the project’s range and depth, with Khiva’s classic sound still ringing out.
