The relationship between Niles Shepard and Slothacid continues to bloom as they give fans a taste of home with Interlaker!
What’s not to love about house DJ and producer duo Niles Shepard? Over the last four years they’ve been crushing the game with infectious releases on Box Of Cats, In / Rotation (Insomniac), and even Sacha Robotti’s Slothacid. Their debut on the sloth master’s imprint was called Follow Me and it certainly made us want to get up and follow the boys straight to the dance floor. Today, Niles Shepard has found their way back to the label, strapped with the tantalizing tunes of Interlaker!
This brilliant little package of booty bouncing beats has already been basking in the love with the ultra-cool Worthy, Steve Darko, and VNSSA all giving the title track a spin during their respective livestreams. And it’s no surprise that this track would be so well received. It begins with a crisp kick as the call of the Loon (Minnesota’s state bird) can be heard overhead. This immediately focuses the brain on natural surroundings, adding a lovely organic feel to the otherwise heavy soundscape.
To paint an even broader picture of Niles Shepard’s inspiration, they deliver an array of horns and synths that rise and fall, meant to reflect the captain’s signals from the freight ships that lumber around the Great Lakes. Add to that a whispered lyric line with a few trippy effects and you’ll have just what you need to get your hips twisting! To make a lasting impression, last night the boys climbed aboard one of the aforementioned ships, the Interlake Steamship Company’s Lee A Tregurtha, and delivered a unique livestream performance.
When it comes to the B-side, you’ll be “Burnin’ Up” with Niles Shepard fever! The track elements are incredibly crunchy with a few festive wubs planted here and there, while the lyrics seem to be delivered by an alien from another planet. It will send you absolutely sideways as your brain gets spun inside out. These boys get better and better with every release and we can’t wait to see what they have in store for us next, but until then, turn your speakers up and give in to the weird.
