DJ Minx proudly presents Queendom Vol. 1, marking the revival of her independent record label, Women On Wax!
Pride celebrations are in full effect around the country, and in true form, DJ Minx is spreading the love and shining a spotlight on incredible queer talent. How is she doing it this time? Well, after two years of silence, Women On Wax is officially back. This was a label established in 2001, born out of the 1996 collective/mentorship for Detroit women who were trying to make a name in the music industry. With the page turned on a fresh chapter, DJ Minx presents Queendom Vol. 1, a compilation that honors a more-than-deserving group of under-appreciated queer artists, of any gender, who have been working their tails off to make us groove.
DJ Minx gets the party started with “Let It Ride,” a track that comes complete with equal parts soft sizzle, stirring vocals, and punchy tones. This is an offering that doesn’t take itself too seriously, but instead, ensures that everyone is having the time of their lives as they shuffle and spin on the dancefloor. DJ, singer, dancer, and fashionista Shaun J. Wright answers back with “Reflection Protection,” bolstering the energy with pronounced thumps, and a touch of acid detail as the distinctive vocals prance lovingly through the airspace.
Up next is Nita Aviance, one-half of The Carry Nation, and a masterful beat-maker who drops by to get the community “Craving” for the rave. This tune is drenched in the unconventional essence of the underground, featuring lively percussion and a domineering acid line that cultivates visions of dark rooms and strobing lights. From here, DJ CENT swoops in to bring the music consumer up from the subterranean realm and into the promised land, uniting with fellow Detroit staple Ken Collier on “Coming To Heaven.” This offering stays light on its feet with an energetic drive yet manages to stay grounded to earth with strong and vibey synth chords.
From the deepest depths to the highest heights, this has been quite a thrilling journey, but don’t get complacent because it’s time to nose dive back into the underground with Blu Music boss Sydney Blu. “Underground Vibrations” delivers exactly what was promised, shaking the party to its core with exotic vibes, celebratory soundwaves, and intoxicating vocals. But, alas, all great things must come to an end. Luckily, Atlanta’s own Debbie Graham makes sure to send us off in style. “Free” offers up the ultimate deep groove, featuring refreshingly funky instrumentals that’ll push listeners into a state of blissful movement.
Without further ado, it’s time to explore the beats for yourself! Celebrate the revival of Women On Wax by grabbing your copy of Queendom Vol. 1 on your favorite music platform, stream the album on Spotify, and let us know what you think of the music on Twitter. Happy Pride!
