Hyroglifics stuns with his new album on Critical Music, I’ll Wait, I Guess, featuring 16 tracks in the realm of dubstep, drum and bass, and more.
Hyroglifics has been steady-grinding in London’s drum and bass scene for over a decade and is also starting to become more known to bass music fans across the pond in the US recently. After his recent appearance alongside Alix Perez in Miami and with their Chicago show on the horizon, there’s no doubt fans of the 140-dubstep-meets-drum-and-bass style have been catching on that Hyroglifics is on fire within this realm.
As no stranger to London’s Critical Music, Hyroglifics’ releases with the label date all the way back to 2014, so it’s only fitting that his debut album would arrive via the imprint. With sixteen tracks, each composed in exquisite detail, I’ll Wait, I Guess explores not only the drum and bass side of Hyroglifics fans know and love but shows off his range with a vast array of styles from lurking dubstep beats and energetic drum and bass to moody garage and thoughtful electronica sounds.
Beyond the solo tunes, I’ll Wait, I Guess includes five tracks with featured vocalists and one killer collaboration. Yeo Limone helps open the album on “Air Like Breath” before Nah Eeto makes for a unique feature on the sultry track “Sing To It.” Released as a single before the full album, this one showcases her Swahili and English-blended vocals that flow harmoniously with Hyroglifics’ smooth but gut-wrenching dubstep beat. Black Josh brings the UK-drill voice that makes “Air Max Flow” one of the grimiest tunes on I’ll Wait, I Guess, while Lyza Jane offers her elegant vocals to a stunning track, “Hotwire,” and Feux adds a tasty layer to “Belief.”
Deft is the producer who had the pleasure of collaborating with Hyroglifics for a track on this massive project. He brings his soul-shattering sounds to help make for arguably the heaviest hitter on the whole album, “Two For Two.” A faster-paced dubstep beat, this tune is infused with one brief moment of gentle floating ambiance in between the bass madness that dominates the soundscape.
Most of the drum and bass beats you’ll hear from Hyroglifics on I’ll Wait, I Guess, like “Gastown,” “You Got It,” and “Burnt Tongues,” are distorted bass-heavy bangers with an eerie undertone that are begging to murk the crowd of an underground club. The final few tracks, however, flawlessly conclude the project with some more emotive offerings, like the title track with its soft halftime flair followed by two incredible garage tunes, a vibrant beat titled “Late Ones” and its moodier garage counterpart, “Telfar.”
I’ll Wait, I Guess is out everywhere now, so listen on Spotify or run to your preferred platform to soak in this uniquely diverse project for yourself.
