Trick kicks off a rowdy house and techno compilation series called Lethal Bangers Vol. 1, featuring Lewis Taylor, Inafekt, Hyyken, and more!
When Patrick Topping launched Trick in 2019, he set forth on a quest to sniff out the most unique beats from both new and established artists. Along the way, house and techno enthusiasts have been treated to experimental sounds like those on Electric Acid Tater Tots by Elliot Adamson, funky fresh rhythms on tunes like NightFunk’s “About Your Love,” rave-ready offerings like Alley Rave by Andrea Oliva, and compilations designed to turn the party on its head, like Tasty Techno Volume One. It’s been a year since that album dropped, and today, Trick fans have a brand new compilation to wrap their ears around in the form of Lethal Bangers Vol. 1!
As one may decipher by the title, this package overflows with 19 massive beats designed for the peak hour. It brings along an eclectic array of tastemaking artists to set the mood, including deep house duo t e s t p r e s s, classically trained musician Pablo Say, Orange Groove Records boss Paul Sirrell, the 90s house-inspired Dec Duffy, Untidy head Sam Townend, and more. But, before we dig into some of the highlights, label head Patrick Topping expresses his feelings about Trick’s latest output.
To be fair, all these could have been A sides, they are that good! I’m buzzing to unleash these 19 bangers on the world. The variety in sounds is what Trick is all about, but they are all connected with a certain energy and distinction. Obviously, I’m biased, but I do think this compilation is unlike any other VA I’ve heard, and I’m really proud of it. It’s mainly an eclectic selection of house and techno, but there are a couple of cheeky Makina tunes thrown in at the end, for the craic! It’s the first time Trick’s released Makina music, but the quality of the other 17 house and techno tracks, makes me think there’s the freedom to do so. Hopefully people enjoy them as much as I’ve enjoyed playing them out.

Diving into the tracks, the first offering that makes a massive impression is Lewis Taylor’s “Pop That.” The energy on this one is absolutely out of control, and it will get you swinging from the rafters or, as the lyrics suggest, popping that pu**y without a care in the world. After a splattering of house tunes that fuel the party with classic energy, you’ll eventually arrive at “ED209” by Ango Taramin. This track will point you straight to the after hours as you dance among rattling tones and a hollowed-out bassline pulse.
From here on out, Trick’s artists weave the music seeker through a collective of unusual sound structures like those found on Mura’s “Free Your Mind” while also remaining true to their inner wild child with rave-ready tunes like “Warehouse Funk” by Dec Duffy, “Cover Me” by Giuseppe Raimondi, and “Acid Riddim” by Hyyken. The latter has a way of tickling every cell in the body with its unconventional acid lines and delightfully drunk personality. Of course, the two Makina-style closers are definitely ones to indulge in, leaving the listener sweating in the wake of the espresso tempo shift.
