Fall Deep Into the Ocean Created Within Yoko’s Mind

in Album Review

Get lost Beneath The High Sea with Yoko and escape your reality as undeniable wonderment greets you at every corner explored.

Yoko may be newer to the scene but continues to catch the attention of labels like The Gradient Perspective, Deep Dark & Dangerous, and Street Ritual. She’s hard not to love, and even well-known artists in the community yearn for her opening slots, such as NotLö, VEIL, and Rusko. The Denver-based artist has been working hard in 2022, and she’s making sure she’s going out with a bang to end the year with the release of Beneath The High Sea.

Having a passion for storytelling throughout her work, she is a mastermind at portraying the inner workings of her mind morphed into sound. One thing listeners can always count on from this queen of frequencies is a heavy dose of bass with eerie vintage influences often afoot, prominently shown throughout the ten tracks on this album.

Within this body of work, Yoko portrays an adventure through the depths of the ocean blue. She guides you as each track takes you into a new realm of her mind. Many emotions test you as the feelings that surface with the drowning suffocation of darkness and uplifting radiating surges of energy caused by the power of light. With the array of sounds and directions you are led to, Yoko shows listeners how diverse and mindful her skillset truly is.

Yoko’s largest body of work to date is out now. Listen on Spotify or your preferred streaming service and read on for a deeper look at the album!

Plunge into the dark blue abyss and let Yoko lead you to places never ventured before.

Setting the storyline “Beneath The High Sea” begins with a distorted voice letting the listener know that this is a translation of the dimensions of Yoko’s mind. It’s the beginning of our journey, and she created this space for a release as wavy bouncy rhythms greet you to warm your senses. Feeling as if you’re floating in a submarine amongst the sea creatures as “Lower The Submarine” enters. The sounds of bubbles burst in your ears as you dive deeper into the unknowns of the water ahead.

If the legend of Davy Jones and Pirates Of The Caribbean could have a new official theme song, it should be “Davy Jones Locker” – with Jack Sparrow samples morphed with bass and strings, it’s hard not to be transported directly onto The Black Pearl. Keeping the wobbly energy of the sea alive with the help of Skinny Limbs, “Mista Big” makes a splash with its up-and-down soundwaves, disrupting the waters surrounding you. There’s no turning back at this point as the darkness engulfs you once you reach “The Mariana Trench.” You can feel the switch up in emotions as you are transported into a dimension of shadows and creatures never before seen by the human eye.

Searching for treasure at sea seems to go hand in hand. With the help of Hooligan, JABBS, and MuteD DiagraM, the “Return to Atlantis” conveys the perfect soundscape for anyone brave enough to venture to find the lost city with each intriguing curiosity felt in each note. Allowing listeners the opportunity to feel weightless, “Shiho’s Seahorse” fills you with innocence as you can picture yourself exploring the colorful world underwater with a seahorse as your guide as the vibrant beat chimes along.

Just as you feel safe, you round the corner, and all you can see is black water as if an octopus had just inked. You are facing the “Edge of Death” as you try to navigate through levels of obstacles with your vision blurred. The only thing keeping you moving forward is the hope of escaping the grim reaper. Your memory is hazy as you open your eyes from your blackout. All you can remember is the darkness that once surrounded you as the eerie vocals of “Deadweight” emerges into your mind. The voices in your head cause you to question your sanity and wait for your final destination.

Then, Rivibes’ words echo out on “Resurface” as each bubble pops on its way to the surface, and you can tell you’re finally heading back upward. With each word spoken as if it’s your spirit guide, you feel your hope returning as you see the light from the sun becoming visible once more.

After your journey through the deep blue sea has been completed, it is easy to say that Yoko is a master at portraying the dimensions within her mind. Beneath The High Sea showcases an impressive assortment of sounds, from ethereal melodies to hard-hitting bass from beginning to end. As the year ends with her most significant body of work yet, 2023 is sure to be a monumental year full of Yoko.
