From start to finish, Mansionair’s Happiness, Guaranteed on Glassnote Records is a relatable, emotional journey in the best way possible.
Mansionair is an indie electronic trio coming from Sydney consisting of Jack Froggatt, Lachlan Bostock, and Alex Nicholls. Since first breaking onto the scene a few years ago, these Aussies have gained plenty of praise with releases like Shadowboxer and its groovin’ singles “Astronaut (Something About Your Love)” and “Easier.” They’ve also bolstered their discography by collaborating on tracks with other movers and shakers in the scene such as ODESZA, Claptone, Dom Dolla, and Manila Killa, among others.
Now, after diving back into the studio, Mansionair has returned with their sophomore album, Happiness, Guaranteed. This ten-track collection of tunes is filled to the brim with emotionally-charged moments and honest, relatable lyrics that are a change of pace from standard dance music. In fact, it’s assured to hit you right in the feels.
The opening track, “MORE,” enters with a hearty synth buzzing, leading into the echoing vocals which catch your attention right away. It evokes similar energy to that of performing in a big theater, giving the drums and vocals enough room to immerse you in the sound. “Happy Now” continues those vibes with the keys playing a melodious repeating chord. The reverb on the track is outstanding. Mansionair did their best to capture the impassioned feelings and you can hear their hard work paying off on this one.
The third track, “Trouble With Us,” starts with plucking from the guitar and a more mellow drum riff blended together with very compassionate lyrics. Then, “Mirror Me” offers up more of a soul-filled rock vibe as Mansionair adds in a violin for extra flavor. It gives off delicate energy in the beginning before taking a turn at the bridge to allow the rock-infused elements to take over. The next track, “Adeline,” is a sweet fifty-five-second poetic interlude, good for transitioning to the next song, “Rapture.” This one starts with a soft guitar riff that’s followed shortly after by the rhythmic pounding of the drums to make it memorable.
Much as its name implies, “A Little Lost” brings mysterious energy along with it to allow listeners to get lost while the guitar chords behind the drumming add just enough flair. Then, “Facedown Domino” gives a smashing beat with their own style mixed in before the final song on the album, “Shallow Water” offers up a sentimental house soundscape. Continuing the energy of the album with their plucking strings and airy synths, this one has the most poetic attitude.
There really is a lot to listen to in the album, more than the beat. The lyrics speak to you on a spiritual level, and we’ve all been in positions where at least one song can fit the mood. So if you’re in the mood for something other than the electronic dance music that is constantly being put out, this is a wonderful change of pace.
