On the IV EP, Sam Gellaitry highlights his growth as an artist with four different soundscapes to create unique settings in each song.
Growing up in a small city in Scotland, Sam Gellaitry started music production in his early teens. He does things a little differently in the music realm, however, by combining music with visual arts and painting pictures with vivid colors. His synesthetic outlook on the world allows him to “paint” the canvas of a track with beautiful hues. And the combination of his songwriting and production talents is synonymous with comparing and contrasting different tones, or notes in terms of music.
To further exemplify that aspect his new EP, IV, focuses on four different looks as he continues his exploration in music. “I’m at an age now where I feel ready to talk and tell people what I’ve experienced in life. It’s perfect timing in that sense,” said Sam Gellaitry as he dove into his growth as an artist. “I’ve done three EPs. I’m at the point now where I’m like – I want all the smoke. Now I’m comfortable singing on my songs, I want to go back to each point in my musical journey and tap into it. I’m using the voice as my anchor, then tapping into other sonics that have influenced me.”
The first track, “New Dawn,” resembles a re-birth with vivid blues and greens. Poppy synths illuminate in the background, reminiscent of something astronomical, and the vocals also guide the track along, seamlessly bonding with its melody. Switching to more of a funky, upbeat sound, “Duo” dances in as the second track and gives a nod to the ’80s. Hard-hitting keys thud along in the first couple of measures, introducing a crisp cut into Sam’s verses. Then, a guitar riff makes a cameo mid-song, giving the track that clean modish overcoat, polishing the dance-pop song off perfectly.
Dipping into some cool-toned colors, “Games” introduces a minor key with echoing vocals. The reverbs and deep bassline marry with the hip-hop influence on this one to create a powerful combination that’s determined to give the song its own unique sense of style. Then, a high-pitched note delicately glides along into “Assumptions,” the final song of the EP. The track still mirrors the nostalgic synths to give it a retro vibe, using a major key to help end things on that high note and leaving listeners feeling uplifted and craving more.
The IV EP from Sam Gellaitry is full of twists and turns along the journey of its runtime. It’s the little surprises and creeping anticipation that really breathe life into the hued hymns and make it stand out.
