Guppi Hits the ‘Ocean Floor’ with His Debut EP

Crystal Luna
Guppi

Guppi might be a fresh face in the bass scene, but he delivered an action-packed EP that’s perfect for Subtronics’ Cyclops Recordings.

Subtronics took the bass music scene by storm at the tail-end of 2020 when he launched Cyclops Recordings and dropped the anticipated introductory compilation, Boot Camp. To keep the steam going, the Philly-native has looked to other talented artists in the bass scene to join the growing imprint, with the latest being Guppi and his debut EP, Ocean Floor.

The four-track Ocean Floor EP is filled to the brim with dubstep tunes marked by the eccentric sound design that Guppi is quickly gaining attention for. The first track, “Hereafter,” dives into the turbulent waters filled with violent wobbles, glitchy blips, and melodic waves along the way. “Trapped” arrives next with energy that packs a punch. Its grungy tones, squeaky synths, and vocal chops will have you bobbing your head the entire time before the bass melts your face.

“Modern Talking” carries on with the glitched-out, alien-like bass beats while also layering in some distorted vocal samples from Dre, Snoop Dogg, and Nate Dogg’s “The Next Episode” that take it to the next level. And once you’ve descended deeper to the darker, ferocious floor of the ocean, “Forbidden Sound” hits the ears with mean laser sounds, rolling percussive elements, and even more distortion.

This EP to me is the punk rebellion of bass music. A middle finger to anyone that tries to put rules on artwork and tries to confine bass music to a specific box. One of the weirdest, most forward-thinking, intentionally broken-yet-undeniably-genius things I’ve heard in a long time.

Subtronics

After giving the EP a listen, it’s pretty clear why Subtronics gave Guppi a shot with Cyclops Recordings. His authentic cutting-edge style of music taps into versatile reaches of the bass music scene which has resonated well with others in the community. Stay tuned for more to come from this rising star in the scene!
