Let’s take things back to 2014 when Krewella just released their debut album and told the world to “Enjoy The Ride”!
The iconic trio Jahan Yousaf, her sister Yasmine Yousaf, and their friend Kris Trindl (Rain Man) first met in a high school, in a suburb of Chicago. By 2007 they had come together to form the group known as Krewella and by 2010 they had decided to “go all in” to pursue music. They used social media to climb the ranks and by 2011 they were ready to release their first tracks on SoundCloud. It would be these tracks that would get them signed to Monstercat by the end of that year.
By 2012 they were ready to release two EPs, “Play Hard” and “Play Harder.” They partnered with an EDM YouTube channel and their track “Alive” earned over 15 million views. That brings us to 2013, the year they released their debut album, “Get Wet” and would release the track this post is about: “Enjoy the Ride“. This year would mark a milestone in their careers as they would play Ultra Miami and earn an International Dance Music Award for being Best Breakthrough Artist.
The year was 2014 and it was my first time attending a festival and I was just coming to understand what Electronic Dance Music was. A few weeks before I was set to attend the Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas my brother sent me a number of playlists to help me gain an idea of what I liked to listen to. I remember listening to “Live for the Night” and feeling the electricity in that first drop, the calm of the reprise, and the strange sounds I had never heard before.
Krewella was performing at EDC Las Vegas and would sing a number of their songs including, “Enjoy the Ride” and it was nothing short of magical. The lyrics are a tribute to the adage “it’s not about the destination but the journey.” As I listened to their set I knew that this was my new path, my journey into a world of music I had never listened to before and a memory I won’t forget.
