“Without You Near” is a dark, atmospheric classic trance song from Markus Schulz featuring Gabriel & Dresden.
Markus Schulz’s debut artist album Without You Near features progressive, melancholy tracks that I still feature on my playlists to this date, standing the test of time with its debut in 2005. The title track received two releases on the album with a Coldharbour Mix and an almost acoustic Reprise version, but it’s Gabriel & Dresden’s Mix release that truly shines.
“Without You Near” pairs Departure’s chilling vocals and Gabriel & Dresden’s signature kicks and bass with Markus Schulz’s sweeping synths and melody for 11 minutes and 13 seconds of soothing progressive trance. The collaboration is dreamy, dark, and emotional, something that gives me similar feelings to Andain’s “Beautiful Things”.
Tracks rarely receive this length of treatment since the switch to digital around this era started to make it easier to mix. Subsequently, lengthy buildups and progression have been somewhat forgotten because the audience wants more tracks in less time.
