In honor of Dreamstate SoCal 2017, this week’s #TBT highlights a bold and timeless production from Dreamstate ambassador Paul Oakenfold!
Tomorrow the gates for Dreamstate SoCal will open for the third time, ushering the trance family home once again for a weekend of powerful beats and blissful celebration. Paul Oakenfold, the master of dance for almost 40 years, was named alongside Paul van Dyk as one of the Dreamstate ambassadors, delivering this year’s Dreamstate theme and preparing for a set that will once again solidify his rightful place among the genre’s pioneer artists. So let’s journey back to 2001 and revisit one of his most prolific tunes, “Dark Machine”, as we prepare for our Trancegiving shenanigans!
Partnering up with Christopher Young, “Dark Machine” was developed as part of the soundtrack for 2001’s bank robbery conspiracy flic Swordfish, starring John Travolta, Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Don Cheadle and Vinnie Jones. Bringing us back to an era where the classic sounds of trance reigned supreme, “Dark Machine” offers up haunting narration with a sultry melody, tech-fueled driving rhythm, and beautiful saxophone details that infect every fiber of the soul and offers up a glimpse into the musical genius that runs deep within Paul Oakenfold.
Paul Oakenfold has developed quite the love affair with the silver screen over the years.
As an artist whose discography boasts multiple movie soundtrack productions including “Dread Rock” from The Matrix Reloaded, “Right Here, Right Now” from Blade II, and “Ready, Steady, Go” from Collateral, just to name a few, Paul Oakenfold proves that he is a force to be reckoned with not just in the dance music scene but in the entertainment industry as a whole. Taking the reins as the production head for the Swordfish soundtrack, “Dark Machine” was one of the tracks that stood out among a slew of incredible musical delicacies that in 2017 still remains a timeless piece of dance music history.
