Seven Lions’ “Worlds Apart” reminds us that distance is heartbreaking
2014 was especially a rough year for me until my friend sent me Seven Lions‘ Days to Come EP. It was my first time exploring the EDM world, which was around the time I started feeling the alternative rock scene had become stagnant.
Once I gave the EP a listen, I found myself binging on his music like it was a hot, new Netflix show. Music is one of my greatest comforts in dire or sad times and one track on Days to Come stood out to me in particular: “Worlds Apart”.

As the song opens, vocalist Kerli calls out and expresses the sadness of longing for someone and the pain of being so far apart emotionally from them. Her haunting and emotive voice stands out and holds its own against the loud, massive dubstep drops.
Kerli’s lines in the song disarm me because there is nothing more relatable than loving someone who doesn’t necessarily love you back. Though the song can have multiple interpretations, it reminds me of past affections that were not reciprocated kindly.
After its epic buildup in the second half, all hell breaks loose with epic synths layered on top of bass chaotically massaging your ears. It’s like exploding fireworks and you feel the same emotional breaking Seven Lions and Kerli must have felt creating the song.
Seven Lions still plays “Worlds Apart” in his current sets, but mashes it up with other tracks like Jason Ross’ “Me Tonight” and Ian van Dahl’s “Castles in the Sky”. As the Horizon Tour makes its journey across North America, you can bet I’ll be singing my heart out when it’s played.
