#TBT || Above & Beyond – Stealing Time

Erin Cropper
Above & Beyond Tri-State Stealing Time

Eleven years after its release, Above & Beyond’s “Stealing Time” remains a timeless trance masterpiece.

These days, Above & Beyond is basically required listening for fans of electronic music. Love them, hate them, or have significant feelings about their move away from traditional trance in more recent years, there is no denying that they are pioneers of the genre. Above & Beyond have left an indelible imprint on electronic music since their inception, and they show no signs of stopping anytime soon.

Way back in 2006, Above & Beyond released Tri-State, their debut album. Hailed as a masterpiece, the album enjoyed widespread success upon its release, featuring singles “Alone Tonight, “Can’t Sleep,” “Air For Life,” and “Good For Me.” Perhaps DJ Magazine said it best:

A blend of sleek electronic rhythms, lush filmic textures and old-fashioned songwriting, Tri-State is the fulfillment of any dance act’s ultimate album aspiration: a padding-free, skilled, diverse long-player. In a word… brilliant. 5/5.”

“Stealing Time” is the second track on the album and features the distinctive vocal talents of Richard Bedford. Bedford has also been featured on a number of Above & Beyond tracks like “Sun & Moon” and “Thing Called Love,” making him one of the group’s most beloved collaborators.

The track starts off with dark synths and Bedford’s distinctive, haunting vocals before the percussive beat kicks in, driving the track forward. Lush chord progressions overlay the track, blending strings and an airy, high-flying melody. Take a listen, and enjoy one of the underappreciated gems from what is arguably one of the greatest debut albums out there.

Above & Beyond – Stealing Time – Lyrics

I’m stealing time from my own life
All the hours that God sends
I’m flying high on my red eye
And winding down the windowsI’m stealing time from my own life
All the hours that God sends
My future is a Valentine
Stolen in the perfect crimeAnd as the hours go flashing by
I’m winding down the windows
And I know I’m living out of line
But with a blazing smile I’ll die

Erin has been listening to electronic music on and off since the early 2000s, which is when trance music captured her heart and soul. Over the years, she has expanded into a number of other styles and genres, especially techno and house. Originally from Chicago, she spent the better part of the last decade seeking out any electronic music she could find, and traveled the length of the country in search of some incredible moments at festivals like EDC, TomorrowWorld, and the Dirtybird Campout. Having since settled in Denver, she focuses her energies primarily on the house and techno scene around town and traveling to mountain and west coast festivals whenever possible.
