#TBT || Avicii vs Nicky Romero – I Could Be The One

We want to pay tribute to Avicii and “I Could Be The One”, a collaborative effort with Nicky Romero that pulls at our heartstrings now more than ever.

My EDM journey has been a long one, with roots in everything from dubstep to big room. Before I became the raging basshead I am today, I found solace in the upbeat tempos and bubbly chord progressions of progressive house. Out of all the artists I listened to from this genre, Avicii was a shining beacon of light who stood out above the rest. When he and Nicky Romero, another one of my favorite artists at the time, came together for “I Could Be The One”, I was ignited with a passion I had never before experienced.

A delectable cymbal crash introduces the track as feather-light vocals enter amidst intricate chords and chimes. The eager intensity builds as vocalist Noonie Bao sings, “I could be the one to make you feel that way, I could be the one to set you free,” and what follows is a sensual, energetic whirlwind of sizzling melodies.

Every single time I heard this song, I couldn’t help but smile and shuffle my feet while singing along. “I Could Be The One”, which was initially named “Nicktim” (a combination of Avicii’s and Nicky Romero’s names) topped charts and filled hearts almost immediately. The song was an emotionally transcendent experience; I simultaneously felt inexplicable happiness and an aching desire to reconnect with past friends and flames.

Now, the song bears a new meaning I was never prepared for…

With Avicii’s passing, I know myself and many others in the EDM community are at a loss for words. There aren’t enough tributes or enough tears to fully understand the depths of our sorrow at losing an icon, an inspiration, a legend, and to so many, a friend.

I’m realizing now that Avicii was the one to make me feel that way, and we all know what that way is: blinding euphoria, overwhelming love, and pure acceptance. His music ushered me into the EDM community and welcomed me with open arms, and if it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t have fallen so in love with it as I have today.

I used to listen to this song and think it was for me to sing to someone else, to let someone know that I was the one all along and I could be the one to set them free. With Avicii’s passing, I can’t help but feel as though it’s a message from him to all of us. I hope you can listen to this song and hear what I mean — that it was this great man who existed for us more than he could for himself, and he who set us free.

Avicii vs Nicky Romero – I Could Be The One Lyrics:

Do you think about me when you’re all alone
The things we used to do, we used to be
I could be the one to make you feel that way
I could be the one to set you free

Do you think about me when the crowd is gone
It used to be so easy, you and me
I could be the one to make you feel that way
I could be the one to set you free

I could be the one to make you feel that way
I could be the one to set you free
I could be the one to make you feel that way
I could be the one to set you free

When you need a way to beat the pressure down
When you need to find a way to breathe
I could be the one to make you feel that way
I could be the one to set you free

If you wanna see me when the crowd is gone
It used to be so easy, can’t you see
I could be the one to make you feel that way
I could be the one to set you free

I could be the one to make you feel that way
I could be the one to set you free
I could be the one to make you feel that way
I could be the one to set you free
