The first time John Summit and Hayla collaborated resulted in the 2023 anthem “Where You Are.”
Controversial or otherwise, John Summit knows how to make music that will resonate with a wide audience. Last year, he collaborated with singer-songwriter HAYLA on the trance-progressive tinged house single, “Where You Are.” The two have reconvened to deliver a follow-up titled “Shiver.”
John Summit (real name John Schuster) and HAYLA (real name Hayley Williams) didn’t venture far from the formula that made their previous joint effort a success. Williams’ angelic vocal is framed by soft keys and warm basses in the early bars of the track, only for effervescent synth work to take shape by the first drop. Thousands of festival-goers will surely sing along to “Shiver” over the course of the 2024 festival season.
“Shiver” appears to be one of the 30 new tracks Schuster shared that he was working on during a trip to London to get into “album mode” toward the end of last year. Williams had also previously tagged Schuster in an Instagram post captioned, “I get this feeling… another hit is in the works,” a reference to the lyrics of “Where You Are.”
Schuster has released music since 2017, but his big break came courtesy of his 2020 single “Deep End” via Defected Records. He has also achieved success with singles like “Sun Came Up” with Sofi Tukker and “Human” featuring Echoes, the latter of which hit #1 on the US dance charts.
In 2022, Schuster launched a record label called Off The Grid but ended up rebranding it as Experts Only in 2023 following a dispute with a SoCal festival of the same name. More recently, he has courted controversy for sharing that he would collaborate with disgraced hip-hop icon Kanye West. “Despite his faults, he was my biggest inspo as a Chicago suburb kid growing up and made me believe that anything was possible,” Schuster tweeted.
