SVDDEN DEATH Decimates With Latest EP, ‘Harbinger’

SVDDEN DEATH is starting 2024 off strong, foreshadowing what’s to come with his first non-VOYD EP since 2018, Harbinger.

Being a fan of SVDDEN DEATH right now is an exciting time. You get to watch both a legend and history in the making. His unabashed approach to his medieval-grunge visual styling, metalstep sound, and ghoulish stage presence result in a distinct artistry that is unmistakably his. While helping to pave the path for others with a similar vision, he has pushed boundaries whenever met with them.

From being the first DJ to take flight during a performance and play the notorious Caverns with a reoccurring festival at the venue, SVDDEN DEATH found his lane and hit it at full speed. Last year in October, he announced on X (formerly Twitter) that he was canceling the rest of his tour to focus on music, his well-being, and making 2024 the biggest year for him yet. It is an admirable and vulnerable thing to share, and yet he has already started to deliver on those promises with the release of his new EP, Harbinger.

Listen to Harbinger on your preferred platform and read on for more about the EP!

Stream SVDDEN DEATH – Harbinger on Spotify:

The title track and lead single came out last November, giving listeners a taste of what was coming from SVDDEN DEATH.

“Harbinger” was eerie, it was ghastly, it was filthy, and it left listeners wanting more. Following the track’s release, we were given more appetizers of what was to come from the project.

The heartfelt heater “Don’t You Dare Go Hollow” featuring HVDES and the trippy “Mind Control” featuring Wooli stoked further anticipation for the project’s full release. SVDDEN DEATH’s artistic vision is clearer than ever with every project, as he executes each concept with precision.

The following singles, “Ten Toad Anthem” and “Forgive Forget,” are reminders of how fun the SVDDEN DEATH project can be in spite of its macabre themes. “Ten Toad Anthem” is a heavy hitter with blustering bass that refuses to let you take it solemnly between its title and lyrics. “Forgive Forget” takes SVDDEN DEATH’s typical unnerving sound and uplifts it with some color bass. Both tracks, at their core, are true to the artist’s sound but also thread his humor and experimentation into their fibers.

With today’s full release, we are given five more nefarious tunes.

“Teeth” featuring up-and-comers Bejalvin is a murderous effort with a surprise or two for listeners. “Torsion” featuring Neonix brings together two forces to be reckoned with to deliver one hell of a track.

“Psycho” and “Yargonaut” are for the metalstep lovers. “Psycho” is a punishing feature that trills endlessly, almost enough to make listeners go mad. “Yargonaut” decimates listeners with vigorous guitar riffs and unforgiving bass. Together, the pair explicitly express the harrowing undertones of the SVDDEN DEATH sound.

At long last, “Immolator” finishes Harbinger with SVDDEN DEATH’s palpable ability to create a world and tell a story with his music. This track is what gore would sound like if it was audible.

While it’s labeled an EP but close to the length of an album, SVDDEN DEATH thinks that Harbinger is not quite either.

“btw Harbinger EP has accidentally turned into what i suppose streaming services would consider an album?” he shared on X. “with the addition of several songs that i’m pretty sure y’all are gonna be excited about getting a full release. i wouldn’t entirely consider it that though; it’s more of a fleshed out mixtape of singles / collabs w homies that i really liked playing out over this summer.”

In the same tweet, he also shared that he is working on his first album. While you anxiously await SVDDEN DEATH’s impending debut studio-length effort, make sure you give Harbinger a listen!
