Lab Group, Skeler, Digital Ethos, and Redrum joined REZZ to bring the heat with impressive sets during the first day of REZZ Rocks V.
REZZ has a perfect track record for curating a unique and fresh experience each year for her highly anticipated REZZ Rocks. Ticket sales took off and sold out quickly once this year’s lineup dropped, but fans were elated to see the second night added into the mix quickly after that also eventually sold out. Coming back to the Red Rocks Amphitheatre for the fifth year, REZZ knew she would need to make the two-night event memorable.
The first night was destined for greatness with an impressively diverse lineup, including Lab Group, Skeler, Digital Ethos, and Redrum, and the following night had an equally fantastic spread of talent with Ivy Lab, Esseks, Rossy, and isqa to warm attendees up before REZZ herself. Between the two evenings, fans could hear several genres like wave, dubstep, 140 dubplates, and drum and bass while immersed in the iconic venue.
But that wasn’t all, as REZZ had another surprise and announced that those attending Red Rocks would be witnessing the debut of her latest and greatest show design, “THE SPECTACLE.” Teasers of the set-up had social media platforms in a stir because it was apparent that the artist had big plans for her fans’ visual enjoyment. Luckily, I had the chance to attend the first night and catch all the action live.
Redrum set the bar high for the rest of the night with many crave-worthy unreleased tracks.
Redrum came out with a point to prove, playing an array of her new songs that haven’t been publicly released. Being her Red Rocks debut, you could see her passion bleeding through each transition from start to finish. It was a full-circle moment for the artist as she once stood in the crowd of the first REZZ Rocks to later perform for the crowd she once was a part of. To close out her set, she brought REZZ’s multi-talented photographer, who also goes by Miss Tiddy, out to rap her most recent song, “OBSESSED,” and the whole venue was in this baddie’s hands.
Next up, Digital Ethos kept the energy elevated, encouraging the crowd to stay activated and hyped. This wasn’t his first rodeo at REZZ Rocks; he opened for the 2018 edition and clearly made a good enough impression to get invited back once more. It felt like he returned with a vengeance because he murdered the decks with plenty of tasty 140 low ends and crowd-pleasing dubstep. The buildup from Digital Ethos into Skeler was the combination REZZ knew we needed.
Wave and DnB were plentiful when Skeler was in charge of the vibes.
One thing that Australian producer Skeler is good at is keeping listeners on their toes. This wave king began the night with many of the classics found on his beloved Night Drive mix series, including his fan-favorite remix of “Conversations.” Knowing that Denver loves drum and bass, Skeler was happy to deliver a hefty dose to satisfy everyone. A favorite that increased heart rates and lit up the crowd was his inclusion of the hit tune “Baddadan” by Chase & Status, Bou, Flowdan, IRAH, Trigga, and Takura.
Everyone could hardly wait for Lab Group’s direct support slot to arrive, and their set was filled with surprises.
Lab Group‘s set started with the original members Potions and Supertask, who played classics like “Nightshift” from their first body of work, Lab Group I, to kick off the bass-fueled experience. You could feel CharlestheFirst’s presence throughout the performance as the duo would layer his vocals over other well-loved tracks to stir up emotions along the way.
Next to join in the fun was tiedye ky, who appeared on stage immediately and added his flavor to the set with his “franks track” remix. Last but not least, to join the crew, Player Dave layered in his amazing rap taste with electronic added elements that always bring out the dance moves from the crowd. To end their set, Lab Group announced they will headline the Mission Ballroom in Denver on February 23 next year.
The anticipation was finally over, and “THE SPECTACLE” did not disappoint.
REZZ proved why she continually sells out the Red Rock Amphitheater year after year, and this round’s edition is possibly the best one yet. To ease the night more gently, she began with several more melodic classic songs, with die-hard fans singing along to every word as OG sounds rolled out. “THE SPECTACLE” shows that the design got incrementally wilder as each minute passed. She took you on a journey with fire, hypnotizing visuals, and some familiar elements of an animated REZZ moving along to her signature sound.
It didn’t just stop there, as behind her visual wall was a big metal replica of the renowned spiral goggles that would add an extra layer to the imagery experience. The most shocking and unexpected trick in REZZ’s back pocket was a full-on drone showing up in the sky above her. There were several drones in perfect unison, creating images of REZZ, spiders, her goggles, and more. It was the first time I had seen that big drone show at a set, and it’s safe to say I was impressed. Everyone cheered in awe as each image seemingly appeared in the sky above.
REZZ Rocks was an experience with many firsts for attendees, which is one of many reasons why REZZ is continually receiving endless admiration and support. From pulling the best acts in the game to play in support to always one-upping herself with new concepts, she deserves to be seen as a trailblazer in the electronic music scene.
