NotLö Showcases Creative Direction on 'Mechanism' EP

Determined to honor the female voice within the bass scene, NotLö brings fiery energy to her latest three-track EP.

Denver-based bass artist NotLö has created a strong audience via releases on Cyclops Recordings, Deadbeats, and Odyzey while utilizing her platform to support her communities as she spreads her love for the scene through heavy music. Sets at Rezz’s Brooklyn Mirage show and Wobble Coliseum II along with back-to-back performances at Bonnaroo and Sonic Bloom have further captivated fans. But before NotLö embarks on the rest of her summer stops she’s dropped off a self-released EP, Mechanism, for fans to feast their ears on.

Featured in her Pride Mix for Insomniac Radio, all three tracks from the Mechanism EP showcase NotLö’s current creative direction and is a testament to the idea that the female perspective is essential within bass. Speaking about the release, she said. “I’m here to prove that women have a seat at the table in the bass genre. I pushed myself with my production skills and sound design on this EP; it’s an ode to women in music.“

The EP opens with “Scream,” a DnB groove that offers gloom with some teeth. Uncanny, ghostly vocal cuts with a tougher bassline keep things moving until the track breaks down in the middle and rebuilds. The same, short but sweetly recognizable melody creeps in and out across several layers like an emotionally permeating scream. Slipped into a slew of recent live shows with success, “Crush That” transitions a grating start into a dubstep drip with swagger. Brassy low tones vibrate throughout but really force themselves forward in the second drop, providing a larger-than-life, big-stomping vibe.

The title track brings the release to a close with pulsing bass notes and a plucking string line to the forefront before a sickening bass and DnB combo runs wild. High-end disharmonies lend a siren-like break before featuring a host of classic hip-hop elements. The track fades out similarly to how it began with a bit more glimmer to properly complete the EP.
