Techno duo Mathame takes listeners on a trip to the cosmos with the release of MEMO, their debut album that features 13 tracks.
Italian brother duo Mathame has left a lasting impression on the scene as pioneers in the realm of cinematic techno with high-quality releases and jaw-dropping visuals. The past decade has been littered with gorgeous soundscapes from the minds of these two creatives as they’ve graced labels like Souvenir Music, Afterlife, Oddity Records, and more. More recently, Mathame began to carve out a new home on Astralwerks, and now the imprint has become the landing spot for their debut album, MEMO.
Clocking in at 13 tracks in total, MEMO is not just Mathame’s biggest body of work to date, but it’s also their most impressive. Singles from the album began to trickle in last year as fans were treated to gems including “Believe” with CamelPhat, “Come For You,” and “So What,” and the duo continued their run in 2023 by dropping off two more – “To Hope” and “Feel Your Ghost” with Tiesto. But there’s so much more to explore on MEMO within the runtimes of its additional eight tunes.
“Unreality” begins this trip into the melodic realm. Pensive notes play in the subtle intro of the track as Small Black’s vocals are layered over to pack in extra layers of emotion. The energy picks up the pace as the seconds tick away, helping prepare you for what’s to come on the ride that you’re about to take with the Italian brothers.
Tracks like “Dance To Death” and “Run Boy” showcase the dynamic production abilities that Mathame brings along with them. While “Dance To Death” leans heavily into atmospheric, trance-fueled melodic elements with gorgeous synths, vocals, and lengthened breakdowns, “Run Boy” puts their indie-dance and electronica influences front and center. Both are must-listens for their sublime soundscapes.
Mathame’s collaborative abilities come to fruition throughout MEMO as well. Beyond the singles and the aforementioned “Unreality,” the duo delivers plenty of immersion with other standouts like “Tomorrow” with Cold Weather Company, “The Doors” with Biishop, “Feeding Love” with Crimer, and “Who” with Lyke. All four of those tracks pack emotive vocals for added depth while delivering euphoric, dancefloor-ready grooves to sweep you away to a distant place in space and time.
If you haven’t started paying attention to the soundscapes from Mathame, there’s no better time than now. The duo brought something special and unique to the scene with MEMO, and this is an album that’s well worth a full listen from start to finish.
