SKYLER Commands Vibes on Emotionally Charged ‘Blue Dream’ EP

Los Angeles-based producer SKYLER showcases her sonic evolution with the five-track Blue Dream EP on Monstercat.

Following her 2021 EP on Circus Records, Iridescent, SKYLER has taken a sharp turn toward a heavier sound, and fans love it! Given her initial traction as an open-format DJ and moving into high-level, original productions, she is proving herself a steadfast and valuable player within the bass scene. Her latest EP, Blue Dream, has landed on Monstercat and encompasses five bass-fueled tracks that have already begun to catch the attention of many, such as “Hit My Line,” which was featured in Rocket League.

The idea of ‘Blue Dream’ initially stemmed from the concept of trying to decipher subconscious messages, meanings, and emotions throughout my own dreams. This EP is a reflection of every subliminal feeling I’ve felt or harbored within the past few years. Color is said to be one of the many elements in dreams that represents significant mental and emotional depths of the human psyche, so for me, each one of these tracks represents a different real-time emotion or experience that I’ve gone through.

“Chrome Hearts” opens the EP softly before building with tempo-driving drum patterns into the track’s first triumphant hit. The title is fitting because every chord sounds as if it had a little extra glitter sprinkled across the top while percussive lines remain constant as a steady heartbeat. The previously released single “Hit My Line” adds fuel to the fire of hope with well-placed builds and drops, ensuring the repeated lyrics bounce around in listeners’ ears.

Singer-songwriter Josh Rubin is featured on “Fix Me” and accompanies the track perfectly by maintaining areas of both gritty masculinity and humility’s softness to convey feeling lost, never at home or at peace. SKYLER’s use of dissonance as a tool for mild discomfort drives the lyrical message deeper, allowing the song to wax and wane into a glimmering finish.

Bold and catchy melodies peek through the otherwise darker underpinnings of “Haunt You”  as simultaneously descending lines give a feeling of being followed. A chilled-out breakdown toward the center offers space to breathe before running toward the next drop and some ridiculously fat basslines in the track’s second half. Closing the EP with sliding notes, intentional pauses, and forceful hits intended to convey varying emotions, “Fall” further exhibits SKYLER’s range while ably meshing it all together.

SKYLER’s creative thoughtfulness shouldn’t be missed; give Blue Dream a listen on Spotify or your preferred platform and let us know what you think on Twitter!
