Applications are open for the Richie Hawtin Ph.D. Scholarship in Electronic Music, Cultures, and Production at the University of Huddersfield!
Let’s be honest, the dance music industry can be an absolute beast to break into, or attain longevity in a market that’s constantly evolving. But, when it comes to achieving your dreams, every avenue must be examined. For many, this may bring them back to the classroom in the quest for guidance and education from the pros. Techno legend Richie Hawtin understands just how invaluable music education can be, and so he has partnered with the University of Huddersfield to offer a PhD scholarship in Electronic Music, Cultures, and Production.
This fateful partnership began when Richie Hawtin first offered himself up as a subject for a Ph.D. over ten years ago. With his heart fully engulfed in the education process and his honorary doctorate in tow, he returned on multiple occasions to offer up services as big as a masterclass and as personal as one on one advice. Fast forward to the present, with the unveiling of this new scholarship opportunity, students will not only get to tap the brain of the Plus 8 and From Our Minds label boss but will also have access to the university’s multiple cutting-edge production studios while working within the Popular Music Studies Research Group (PMSRG).

I’m honoured to continue my relationship with the University of Huddersfield and participate in their Ph.D. Scholarship program. My hope is to offer my experience and insight into the many areas of Techno culture which I’ve been involved in over the past thirty years. To assist in a student’s exploration of the past and inner workings of our industry and help them offer new critical analysis from a contemporary perspective.

Applications are now open but should be acted on quickly because February 10 is the final day for submission. The university will choose the winning applicant, but not without advice from Richie Hawtin himself. It’s important to note that while Huddersfield residency is preferred, there’s also a long-distance learning route available.
