Lemaitre has been making incredible music since their debut, and today we’re taking it back to 2013 with “Cut To Black” from their Relativity 3 EP!
Since 2010 the Norwegian duo of Ketil Jansen and Ulrik Denizou Lund, better known as Lemaitre, have been producing music that incorporates a variety of elements including brass instrumentation, heavy bass, high-energy synths, thoughtful lyrics, and everything in-between. They also perform with an infectious energy that blew me away the first time I caught them at M3F back in 2018 and instantly fell in love with their indie-electronic sound.
Although I didn’t find out about their track “Cut To Black” until a few years after it was released I was able to dive deeper into the project that provided a home for the track. The song was released in 2013 on Relativity 3 and is the final track of the EP. It begins with a light and airy synth intro before the kick drum, bass, and lyrics have you nodding your head to the beat. It’s also a track that can immediately put you in a better mood because it has that feel-good vibe.
Interestingly enough, even though “Cut To Black” was the last track off Relativity 3 it also made the cut when they released their debut album Chapter1 in 2017. Just as “Cut To Black” seems to hold a special place in Lemaitre’s heart I harbor the same sentiments. Anytime I hear it I want to listen to it on repeat and end up on a Lemaitre kick for the next week. Take a listen to the track below and let us know what you think about it in the comments!

Lemaitre – Cut To Black – Lyrics:
She whispers
“You’re lost, you’ll find what you’re looking for. I hope.”
So take me down, we’ll see ’bout that
Keep on looking out for the rat
Exterior, sunlit motel parking lotInterior, grungy hotel room suite
Years passed by
Looking older now, forty-ish
Dimly lit room, two silhouettes
Two shots, broke wiretap cassetteTitle card
Incarcerated, a year goes by so slow
Two years, he’s having fun
Times fly but that gets old after a while
Five years, it’s the end of the lineExterior, beach
Narrated by the man who spent a lifetime
Living in a castle made of sand
All along while we see the silver lining
Clouds closing and the sun stops shiningExterior, jail, wide-angle shot
Finally out, no one’s waiting for him at the gate
Two years, all he knew has passed or moved away
Five years, it’s getting darker every day
Ironic it’s not that light insideExterior, beach
Narrated by the man who spent a lifetime
Living in a castle made of sand
All along while we see the silver lining
Clouds closing and the sun stops shining
Day slowly turns to night, bird’s perspective, colors fade
