Röyksopp surprises fans with Nebulous Nights, an ambient album that dares the listener to venture into their own mind and remain open to all possibilities.
Röyksopp quietly released the second album in their Profound Mysteries trilogy, Nebulous Nights (An Ambient Excursion Into Profound Mysteries), today, Friday the 13th via Dog Triumph.
Following the highly acclaimed first installment of the trilogy, Nebulous Nights invites the listener to exercise their “critical thinking and curious pondering skills.” The album promotes expanding one’s perspective and mindset through personal growth.
Nebulous Nights features vocals from what sound like psychologists, and spiritual teachings that break down some of these ideas. This audio is barely noticeable in some tracks. It softly floats under the synth lines, almost like the detached voice of a guide leading you through the journey.
The “ambient excursion,” as this album is billed, is a 30-track sonic journey. It’s a cinematic experience, really. Nebulous Nights takes us through this imagined film scene by scene. Deliciously detailed, long, and layered sounds flow seamlessly throughout the entire trek.
There’s a rise and a fall. It ebbs and flows. Harmonious, ominous synths roar to build suspense, while lighter, angelic sounds flutter underneath the ethereal vocal of featured artist Susanne Sundfør. It’s almost like watching a film with the director’s notes.
Longtime Röyksopp fans will be particularly fond of Nebulous Nights. The album is full of Easter eggs inspired by the mysteries behind the Swedish pair. These are secrets that only superfans would know, giving the album a nostalgic feeling.
Profound Mysteries is a new venture for Röyksopp. The duo have departed from their traditional album formatting to shift gears into a new era of expression. The eponymously named first volume of the Profound Mysteries series is a ten-track effort with ten short films accompanying the album.
Royksopp join a growing number of producers who are dabbling in the ambient arena. Artists such as Moby and Yotto have also released highly praised ambient albums in recent years.
Nebulous Nights (An Ambient Excursion Into Profound Mysteries) is available now for listening on all streaming platforms.
