Genix Takes Everyone Back in Time on ‘YOU.ME.NOW’

YOU.ME.NOW is the latest body of work from Genix to land on Anjunabeats, and it’s a marvelous, nostalgia-filled ride from start to finish.

If there’s one artist on Anjunabeats who has truly broken free of genre confines, it’s Genix. Over the span of his career, he’s excelled at creating memorable tunes in the trance realm but has also dug deep into other styles like house and techno as he continues to explore his past influences. Genix’s 199X album was a great indicator of how he channels other styles in his work, and other releases have been an absolute treat as well. Now, he’s shaking everything up once again with the release of YOU.ME.NOW.

YOU.ME.NOW is out now on Anjunabeats and features 14 tracks, each of which showcases Genix’s dynamic production style. Yet while the album is a modern treat, its core is truly a trip back in time to the days of raves gone by. Catchy vocals, punchy basslines, classic rave stabs, acid tones, and piano melodies dominate the runtime, placing you directly in the midst of an underground rave from decades ago as the seconds tick away.

Musically, I wanted to try and push those sounds that I’m finding myself listening to all the time at home. Music that is based more around short hooks and vocals, instead of the longer song format. I’m a huge fan of pianos, and I wanted to draw on those to give YOU.ME.NOW a ’90s house vibe, but to also put my own stamp on it.

Genix

Many of the bigger standout tracks on YOU.ME.NOW, like “Baby Baby” with Sandy Chambers and “Lights, Sound, Camera, Action” with flowanastasia, landed as singles in the lead-up to the album’s release. Yet there are many others that are sure to leave a lasting impression.

The album’s opening track, “Strange, Strange Day,” kicks everything off with gusto. Those aforementioned piano notes are on full display from the jump, as a subdued vocal hook creeps in from the background and synths take over. It’s an absolute dancefloor stomper. On the opposite end to close the collection is “Flying,” which is brimming with vocals from Joe Haze and features a classic house groove that will leave you feeling like you’re soaring.

In between those two tunes are even more gems dripping with ’90s house aesthetics like the album’s title track and “There Is No Fall In Love,” both of which bring their own flair while remaining consistently fantastic. Other tracks show off how Genix layers in vocals differently depending on the mood. JVMIE takes center stage on “Bloom” for one of the album’s most chilled tunes, while LYCA complements the beat on “Under My Skin” perfectly. “Dream Of You” with Everyone You Know also sticks out as special with its fantastic lyrical flow.

YOU.ME.NOW is another beautiful body of work from Genix that deserves a listen. Give it a spin on Spotify or your preferred platform and punch your ticket back in time to the ’90s warehouse rave scene.
