Christina Novelli Takes a Stand with ‘It’s Not Me, It’s You’

Christina Novelli drops off her latest album, It’s Not Me, It’s You, using past relationships as her muse on the collaborative project!

English DJ/producer, vocalist, and instrumentalist Christina Novelli is back with another head-turning body of work after the Through My Eyes acoustic project back in 2019. Her latest studio album adventure had her reliving history, and the title earns the respect of any person who has had to dip out of an unhealthy union: It’s Not Me, It’s You.

Christina Novelli pointed out that she was looking to “share experiences of the various types of relationships I’ve navigated in my life, and the journey — so often of self-discovery — they’ve taken me on.” What she delivered was ten tracks that’ll do damage at the club, wrought with heavy emotional undertones.

Mirroring any healthy breakup situation, you never go it alone. Instead, you turn to your friends for comfort and advice or, in this case, to work hand in hand on the beats. Sarah de Warren, Linney, Reigns, Bo Bruce, Susie Ledge, and Sue McLaren all answered the call.

For as long as I can remember I’ve always wanted to do joint vocal collaborations, so I thought this was the perfect time to introduce this. The vocal collaborations are also co-writes, which meant we were able to share our stories, in the lyrics we wrote. Each artist that I worked with on this album, I chose specifically because of their individual and unique talents. I love how perfectly they’ve mastered their own craft and how much they’ve inspired me in their music. So, I just knew they would get the vision I had for this album and together we would create magic.

It’s Not Me, It’s You kicks off with “Black Heart,” featuring lyrics that represent the racing thoughts that follow a tumultuous breakup. What makes the track so special is the uplifting auditory aura that paints a picture of a happy life beyond the grief. Christina Novelli hammers this down going forward, mixing stories of disconnection with monumental trance melodies to help the spirit re-discover its glow.

Many moments inspire a lump in the throat, like “Memories” and “While My Angel Sleeps” with Reigns. The lyrics will have listeners plunging into the arms of their loved ones while tears fall like rain. If you’re looking for respite from the storm, It’s Not Me, It’s You has those too. “We’re Home” comes to mind, generating warm and fuzzy feelings with a story of soul mates.

Just when you think you think the album couldn’t get any more emotional, Christina Novelli and Sue McLaren toss in a bonus. “Landslide” is a brilliant nod to Fleetwood Mac‘s famous song of the same name. The duo brings the retrospective storyline into the dance realm with a gentle chugging bassline and euphoric synths, helping listeners close the door to their past and open a new one into the future.

If you’ve ever gone through a breakup, getting ready for one, or just need an emotional purge, then It’s Not Me, It’s You is for you! Grab your copy on your favorite music platform and stream the album on Spotify!
