The aptly titled Let’s Begin sees Adam Beyer reaquaint himself with the sounds at Drumcode’s roots.
Techno is about the future, and this certainly isn’t lost on Adam Beyer. Still, at a time in which the genre is cross pollinating with myriad outside influences, revisiting the past may well give us the compass needed to identify a clear path forward. Let’s Begin arose from this very mindset. Adam’s new EP on Drumcode takes inspiration from the sonic palette at the label’s roots, fitting it for modern dancefloors.
The title track opens the effort, making its intentions known right off the bat. Punctuating its driving percussion and bassline are synth stabs that hark back to the Drumcode of old, adding some semblance of melody while still keeping things obscure and challenging. Only at the breakdown does an alluring vocal refrain give the listener a respite from the action.
Accompanying it are “Computerized” and “Red Room,” each of which offer different interpretations of the same nostalgia. The former track leans toward the hardgroove end of the techno spectrum with an added measure of festival appeal. The latter holds the listener captive as it gallops into the sunset, an unrelenting drumline emphasized at calculated integers by a heavily reverbed synth tone.
“This new three-tracker is on the rawer techno tip and is an ode to Drumcode’s earlier material. It’s a take on the ‘90s sound blended with new modern elements. For this release I wanted to take the Adam Beyer techno sound from that period and bring it up-to-date. It’s dirty with a new twist, direct and to the point. This project is not a statement, rather it’s a release that was inspired by the big techno shows I played in Europe this autumn like Awakenings, Mayday and Timewarp.”
