Bass duo Smoakland are back with their biggest project yet. Their second album, Stay In Your Lane, is out now on Left Coast Records.
Already on track to become a significant name in electronic music, Smoakland are not slowing down any time soon. Their combination of old-school hip-hop styles and earth-shattering basslines creates infectiously catchy tunes that grab ahold of bass music enthusiasts.
Releases like their High Rollers EP and their drum and bass project Liquid Smoak are perfect examples of their range in talent, including bangers like “Worth All The Wait” and “Falling Down.” The Oakland-based duo have had a whirlwind of a year, including opening for Zeds Dead at Deadrocks, playing GRiZMAS in July, and touching down at many venues across the country.
Following the 2020 release of their first album, Modern Throwback, it’s evident Smoakland’s sound and production value have exponentially increased over the years. The duo have announced the arrival of their second album, and also their biggest effort to date, Stay In Your Lane. With a whopping twelve tracks that dominate sound systems, Stay In Your Lane is packed with an eclectic selection of heavy heaters and blissful melodies. Smoakland will also perform at the Ogden Theater tonight in celebration of the release.
Stay in Your Lane kicks off with the album single “Mind If I Smoke” featuring Chuwee, which incorporates sick lyricism and relentless, hip-hop-styled beats. The journey of the LP captures the signature essence of Smoakland’s wall-to-wall rhythms and gripping bass, especially prevalent in “That’s What I’m Talking About” and the title track.
The more chilled-out, vibe-heavy tracks “Look What You’ve Done” and “Never Go Back” experiment with ebbs and flows of emotional melodies while keeping a steady grove. The single “Falling Again” featuring musical legend Tiedye Ky is an album standout. The sonic soundscape blends the individual talents of each artist, including Tiedye Ky’s lyrical flow and acoustic flair.
Of course, no Smoakland creation is complete without taking a deep dive into their love for drum and bass. “Borrowed Time” featuring the extremely talented vocalist Amanda Movio takes a dip into their Liquid Smoak alter ego. Tracks like “You Got It” and “Hella Cold” have a Bay Area flair and heavily rhythmic flow. Another standout track, “All In My Head,” features renowned songstress Luma, a glistening melody, and heart-wrenching hooks. Concluding the project is the third album single, “Rain In The Shadows” with Laville, incorporating a smooth bassline with captivating vocals.
The culmination of tunes on Stay In Your Lane represents the personal growth of Smoakland, reflecting the trials and tribulations of staying true as artists in the real world. After they tried out new sounds and ultimately dove deeper into their niche, Stay In Your Lane represents the very moment Smokland hit the mark on their stellar production style, musicality, and natural flow.
Of course, their sets are not to be missed on any festival lineup, either. We recommend checking out a show on the remaining dates of their nationwide tour promoting the new album. We hope you catch Smoakland at a stop near you to experience these tracks live!
