Dutch producer San Holo redefines EDM through his all-new compelling live show that encourages self-discovery and reminds you of your worth.
EDM, as we all know, is short for electronic dance music. But Sander van Dijck aka San Holo reinvented the popular term with an alternative meaning that defines the next era of his career: EXISTENTIAL DANCE MUSIC.
His next chapter comes with the release of his third album under the same name paired with a brand new live show and his biggest album tour to date. Having just wrapped up the first leg of the EXISTENTIAL DANCE MUSIC (EDM) tour on Halloween, he will hit the road again in January 2024 to give more fans a taste of existentialism.
Over the past decade, San Holo has garnered an international fan base. Since the release of his debut album, album1, he’s continued to push electronic music forward with his ethereal sound composed of vibrant synths and dreamlike melodies. His one-of-a-kind performances captivate audiences through live instrumentation, multicolored visuals, and overall warm, welcoming vibes.
San Holo’s genre-defying music spans the entirety of the emotional spectrum and explores human nature as a whole, digging deep into life’s contemplative everyday questions. His music invites fans to partake in this exploration while allowing them to find their true selves along the way. True music lovers connect to music that makes us feel understood. San Holo’s EXISTENTIAL DANCE MUSIC project accomplishes just that.
Seeing San Holo live for the first time was certainly years in the making. I’ve been an avid dance music listener for nearly a decade, and over the years I’ve compiled a “DJs I Need To See” list in my notes app. At the top of my list was none other than San Holo, and last week I finally got to cross him off.
The EDM tour made its way to New York City for a two-night run, and I caught the first show at the legendary Webster Hall. Unfortunately, we had to miss the openers due to a prior commitment. Based on the crowd’s energy upon arrival, however, it was obvious that OddKidOut and DROELOE crushed it. We situated ourselves in the back behind the sound booth, which turned out to be one of the best spots in the house.
Once 10:45 PM rolled around, the lights dimmed, the crowd hushed, and a silhouette of San Holo appeared behind a white curtain. It was only the beginning of what I can confidently say was one of the best productions I’ve ever seen at Webster.
Throughout San Holo’s 90-minute set, he played the perfect blend of nostalgic throwback tracks like “We Rise” and “Light.” They kept the crowd dancing with pure joy, while more emotive tunes like “Honest” and “bb u ok?” sparked moments of deep reflection and human connection.
He meticulously weaved in songs from his latest album, throwing in melodic riffs and embellishments to remind the audience of his impeccable live performance skills. Speaking of performing, his ability to strip each track down to its acoustic version was mesmerizing and unlike any other live show I’ve seen in electronic music. Whether he was playing guitar, keyboard, singing, or all of the above simultaneously, it was clear he put every ounce of his heart and soul into this set.
The visual production of the show was a key element in creating a stunning, immersive environment. Striking visuals perfectly synchronized with the music as they transitioned from heavenly, hypnotic sequences to explosive bursts of color.
San Holo’s stage presence was equally captivating as he interacted with fans while playing guitar live, adding an extra layer of authenticity to his performance. The positive energy in the room was palpable, and it was clear that this show was about more than just music; it was about a collective experience and the emotions that music can evoke. From euphoric highs to introspective lows, the crowd was locked in the moment he struck the first chord to when he took a bow.
San Holo’s EXISTENTIAL DANCE MUSIC tour was a breathtaking blend of music, visuals, and emotion. His ability to take the audience on an existential journey is a testament to his growth and dedication to curating a unique live experience. The performance served as a beautiful reminder of the communal power of music in bringing people together.
The EXISTENTIAL DANCE MUSIC tour picks back up on January 12 in Tempe, Arizona and will make stops across the Southern US. Tickets are on sale now so don’t miss out on this rewarding live music experience!
