The return of NERO has begun to pick up some serious momentum with the release of “Truth” and news of their third album, Into The Unknown.
Live electronic trio NERO has a legacy in the scene that has stood the test of time. First emerging nearly two decades ago with releases influenced by jungle and drum and bass, they picked up steam as they shifted gears into the dubstep realm. In 2011, NERO released their debut album, Welcome Reality, which helped deepen their grip on the scene and propelled them to greater heights, and their follow-up, Between II Worlds, arrived just a few years later as they continued to explore new soundscapes.
After the release of Between II Worlds, NERO focused on other projects and their personal lives, and releases from the trio have been sparse for the better half of nearly a decade. Singles like “Lullaby” and, more recently, “Renegade” with RL Grime kept fans hopeful for the trio to make a grand return, and today, NERO has announced that Into The Unknown is set to land as the concluding album in their trilogy that began years ago.
The release of Into The Unknown arrives as NERO celebrates 20 years of the project in 2024 and will further display their musicality and cinematic style. Those hunting for the first taste of what’s to come can tune in to the album’s first single, “Truth,” which landed today and takes listeners on a trip beyond the realms explored by them in past eras, deeper into the darkness of the unknown.
“Truth” begins with an eerie, cinematic intro that leaves you feeling like you’re floating through the darkness of space. But within seconds, you’re jolted with energy as the hypnotic bassline and sample from Amanda Palmer kick in to dominate your mind, body, and soul. Palmer’s lyrics stem from Neil Gaiman’s poem The Mushroom Hunters, perfectly aligning with the trio’s futuristic, Sci-Fi-driven nature and dystopian soundscapes.
More is on the way soon, with Dan commenting on X (formerly Twitter), “This is the first single. Album dropping soon. We won’t leave you hanging again… we promise. This is just the start.” He also teased that a tour will arrive along with Into The Unknown‘s release in 2024 by giving a solid wink, and we can’t wait to see what they have in store.
