HOLLOW WORLD is Kill The Noise’s audio-visual love letter to the past, present, and future of his sound and dance music culture.
Kill The Noise has put in work over decades to hone his skills and become the powerhouse producer we know him as today. He has fearlessly traversed through different dance music genres while dipping his toes into the broader music world, connecting and collaborating with artists like Korn and Wiz Khalifa. With seven years between his first and second album, EMBRACE, released in 2022, fans are now being gifted his third record just a year later, HOLLOW WORLD, paired with a mini-movie.
Having built a home for himself on Seven Lions’ Ophelia Records, it should be no surprise that this release has landed on that imprint. HOLLOW WORLD is a ten-track journey through the triumphs and hardships of our inner worlds, with a mini-movie to illustrate the trek. The project is chock full of talent who bring the release to life, with collaborators including Joywave, Feed Me, HALIENE, and Shadow Cliq. At the same time, the visual component sees film composer Brian Tyler and Adult Swim animators from Augenblick Studios join in.
HOLLOW WORLD is best consumed by viewing the mini-movie followed by a listen to the album.
The film feature opens with a blast of euphoric synths from Kill The Noise’s collaboration with Shadow Cliq, “Ultraviolent,” and kicks it into drive as our main character heads into battle. From there, the viewer is constantly at war with who is the heartfelt heroine and who is the vivacious villainess, which is amplified by the soundtrack. These lines are blurred, with every character appearing the same. This calls for introspection, confronting that sometimes we are the victor and sometimes we are the villain, as well as the inner battles that come with deciding which one we are.
The duality of this theme is continued throughout the album side of the project.
Going from the epically brutal track “Ultraviolent” straight into a tenderly melodic track like “Afraid Of The Dark” with Karra acts as a sonic rollercoaster to start the album off. This juxtaposition is aptly followed by “Circles” which encompasses many different styles, from experimental bass and glittery chiptune to melodic deliciousness and crunchy dubstep. This duplexity is highlighted by the tune being titled “Circle” while the track repeats “tetrahedron,” two very different shapes.
The following tunes, “Mirage” with Feed Me and Tasha Baxter and “Paper Moon” with Anjulie and ARE WE DREAMING, give the listeners room to breathe between the previous heavy hitters. This pace is short-lived, as listeners are smacked with the most energetic track off HOLLOW WORLD, “I LUV U.” A hard dance heater, this is the track from the album that is sure to take over festival stages.
“Broken Panes” with Vulgatron and PAV4N echoes Kill The Noise’s sentiments battling being jaded.
With lyrics like “I seen the system crushing progress time and time again,” we are again faced with a dichotomy. Viewed through a jaded lens, this statement is one of exhaustion and despair, where one is tired to the point of giving up. When viewed through a fresher lens, this statement is a call to action where one is inspired to change a crushing system.
This is mirrored in the mini-movie, where it seems like our protagonist is constantly fighting against something far more cruel than imaginable while at times succumbing to that pressure and seeming to give up. The end of the mini-movie is dependent on your perspective. Did our heroine meet her end and our villain victorious, or did our heroine ascend to her highest self, leaving her opposition behind?
“Drive” features the indie rock band Joywave, where Kill The Noise blends their styles to deliver a groove-driven track where the bass mirrors the softer guitar riffs of the featured collaborator’s genre. The song is vocally driven and playful, serving as a bridge between the high-energy track prior and the profoundly expressive one that follows. The closing tune to the album, “Give Out,” leaves listeners with a glimmer of hope. After battling with the highs and lows of our humanity, the conclusion urges everyone to “don’t give up and don’t give out,” carried by an ambitious melody and vocals from HALIENE.
Kill The Noise’s third studio project was created with a wealth of expertise and a willingness to stay fresh. The mini-movie side of HOLLOW WORLD is a flex of his creative outlook and collaboration prowess, bringing his sound to life with an audio-visual storytelling experience. He has truly mastered connecting underground sounds to the mainstream with reverence to the culture, so dive into his newest audio-visual release and be on the lookout for what he has coming next!
