matphilly delivers his debut album i may be through with the past, but the past is not through with me on Nightenjin that’s filled with unique sounds.

Born and raised in California, matphilly‘s beginnings with music can be traced back to birth. With musicians as parents, the artist was surrounded by instruments and fueled with the desire to create. Growing up heavily influenced by punk rock and house music, matphilly played in hardcore, pop-punk, and emo bands before stumbling across Skrillex and eventually returning to his passion for electronic music to embark on a new sonic journey. Now, he’s bestowed his debut album i may be through with the past, but the past is not through with me out now on Nightenjin Records.

Twelve songs deep, all of which brandish long titles in reference to influential events and moments in matphilly’s life, i may be through with the past, but the past is not through with me gallivants through a unique cluster of soundscapes with raw excellence. Each and every track explores a vast array of sound – from hard-hitting electro and dubstep to instrumental infusion and trap, matphilly leaves no aural terrain untouched.

With so many tracks to choose from, we’ve picked out a few of our favorites!

Fans of dubstep reminiscent of the mid-2000s sound will enjoy “i always thought i would be apart of the 27 club,” “dessbo,” and “damn that sucks, alexa play that’s what you get by paramore,” while lovers of more freeform flavor will succumb to the electrifying trills of bass in “this song is thiccer than pokimane dawg.” Fist pump to each pulsating synth thwomp in electro banger “when the going gets tough ted cruz goes to cancun,” or fall under the hypnotic spell of “you only hit me up when you want me to get you into spaceyacht” with its sweeping instrumentals and electronic influence.

i may be through with the past, but the past is not through with me is an homage paid to matphilly’s versatile musical past and future. Evidence of the artist’s constant pursuit of new sounds and ways to integrate pivotal life events into his tunes, this debut album feels beautifully personal, emanating crushing vulnerability as well as newfound strength. Rooted in an assortment of genres and having an incredible story to tell, matphilly is continuing to garner attention within the electronic space, and we are excited to witness what more is in store for the artist.

matphilly continues to diversify his sound with her new album. Stream or download it on your favorite platform or listen below, and let us know what your thoughts are on it in the comments!
