Carnage brings the Road Rave to Phoenix and Orlando with lineups featuring Hulk Gang, Riot Ten, Blunts & Blondes, and more!
As states have begun to re-open and artists seek out opportunities to reconnect with fans in a live setting, Carnage has joined in with Road Rave, the first “Drive-in Festival” of its kind. Set to take place over the course of two weekends in two different states, the first installment comes to Phoenix on May 30 and then will head to The Central Florida Fairgrounds in Orlando on June 6, with both shows running from 7pm – 11pm.
Brought in partnership with Disco Donnie Presents and Medium Rare, the lineup features Carnage as the headlining act alongside other notable heavy bass music acts. The Phoenix lineup includes Hulk Gang (a joint project between 4B and Valantino Khan), SayMyName, Dr. Fresch, Bijou, and Paz; while Orlando fans will be able to enjoy Rio Ten, Blunts & Blondes, Nitti Gritti, and Gravedgr. We can only imagine the number of trap arms that are going to be flung in these parking lots.
Road Rave is being promoted as the ideal blend between a live EDM festival and a drive-in movie, pairing pyrotechnics and LED walls with a 600-car limit and strict social distancing guidelines.
Like a traditional drive-in movie, attendees will arrive via their vehicles to a parking spot at the fairgrounds and will enjoy the night’s festivities from that spot. The event is limited to 600 cars with a small number of ticket-holders per vehicle and will provide full festival main stage production, including cryo, lasers, and pyrotechnics.
But what about social distancing measures? According to the event promoters, Road Rave will be heavily enforcing those guidelines throughout the event to maintain the health and safety of attendees. For example, while there will be onsite food trucks, roaming golf car vendors will take orders from each car. Masks are also mandatory and there will be restrictions on when attendees may leave their vehicles.
Whether an event of this format is viable, or even advisable, during the COVID-19 era remains to be seen.
Suffice to say, observers across the industry will be clamoring to see the fallout or success of this event format for the COVID-19 era. While the current guidelines laid out to protect attendees from the risk of spread at the event seem robust and thoughtful, however, certain practical realities like restroom use and the need for people to stretch their legs after sitting in a car for hours on end have caused some eyebrows to raise at the feasibility of promising actual safety to the attendees.
How the overall production and audience experience flows will also make this a fascinating case study. Will the lasers and LED Wall have the same mesmerizing effect when viewed through your windshield? Will the boss wobble you enough when you’re listening from your car? Only time will tell!
