The first chapter of Materia is set to be released by Cosmic Gate on January 20th!
It’s no lie that Cosmic Gate has been one of my favorite electronic music duos over the years. Whether it’s their classic tracks like “Fire Wire” and “Exploration of Space”, or even more recent anthem “Be Your Sound”, the duo has always pushed their sound forward to new heights. Next year, fans of Cosmic Gate will be in for a treat as the release of a new album, Materia, is on the horizon. The word “Materia” has a fitting definition for the title of this album, as it means “base, matter. essence, the substance that all things are made of” and that is precisely what this LP turned into.
“We didn’t set out to create the most definitive Cosmic Gate releases ever”, said Nic Chagall, when talking about the process behind his and Bossi’s latest album project. “It is how it turned out though”. Bossi picks up “and each track we finished over its 12-month timeline, we became ever more aware of how fundamentally ‘Cosmic Gate’ the developing album sounded. Who knows? Maybe these’ll be the ones that, over time, people will hold up and say: “hey, this is what Cosmic Gate are all about”.
Nic went on to say: “the longer we worked on the album, the more ideas came on the table: ones for songs, sounds, collaborations and other elements. We met with other artists and talked to them about it. We found a lot of them shared our vision and subsequently many wanted to become a part of it. The upshot of it all was we ended up with far more album demos than any of our previous releases, and with a higher ratio of ones we wanted to include too. It became a bit of a monster! Far too many for one release. It was a nice problem to have, sure, but a problem nonetheless! So the idea came about to tell the story of Materia over more than one album.”
If you read the above quote correctly, Materia will not be your traditional album release. Cosmic Gate has put a twist on the experience, deciding to split the album up and release it in chapters as opposed to one release. January 20th will mark the release of Chapter One, with Chapter Two planned for release later in the year. This two-part story arc is something that is rarely seen in the current scene and has allowed the duo to include more music for fans. Cosmic Gate are not the only artists who will be featured on the album, as collaborations with other epic artists will be seen throughout. Notable collaborations on Materia are “Spectrum” with Ilan Bluestone, “Dynamic” with Ferry Corsten, and “Edge Of Life” with Eric Lumiere.
