What was your first electronic music event?
SubDub in Leeds, England.
What/who influenced you to attend your first event?
The guy who took me to Subdub was someone I was couch-surfing with in Manchester. I was there for the weekend to get a tattoo and he asked if I would be up for a “club night.” I was game for anything at that point and had a history of loving anything bass-y. Needless to say, I was hooked after a drum and bass-filled evening of dancing.
What is one moment from an event that was special and why?
Okeechobee 2018, Liquid Stranger on the beach. I was there with the people I love to fest with most. Most of them were new friends at this point. I took the liberty to plop down and draw for most of the set. Pretty much in my own world vibing… when I looked up and saw the smiles on everyone’s face. I knew I was surrounded by some of the most loving and unique people shining brighter than any LED light. Straight LIVING! It was comforting and warm to feel that connection with them and knowing we would have that again and again in the future.
What is your favorite festival or event?
Hulaween was my first camping festival so it holds a place near and dear to my heart. Not to mention, Suwannee is an unbelievable venue. I’m not sure how future Hula’s will be after the money issues of last year but I have faith that the spirit of the Suwannee will always shine through for that fest.
What is your favorite electronic song and why?
A song that I always manage to come back to is “Sodium” by aztek x hapa x tsuruda. It’s dark, minimal and straight nasty. On the other hand, I also super love “Drizzling” by Mindex. I love this one for the opposite reason, it’s complex, flowy and paints a real picture in my head of water.
Who are your favorite artists?
STS9, Mindex, Tsuruda, Schlump, Russ Liquid, Manic Focus, Of The Trees, The Widdler, Levitation Jones, Smith… jeez, so many. Favorites aren’t really my thing…
What are your favorite genres?
Again, not big on favorites but I tend to lean towards heavier minimal bass/trap, and funk-inspired music. I’m a sucker for anything with brass instruments.
What do you feel your “Identity” is in the electronic music community?
I’m the kind of person who doesn’t prioritize big fests but thrives for smaller shows. Don’t get me wrong, I love camping fests, but they are an intense commitment and aren’t quite as intimate or dark as smaller club shows.
I wish I had more time to spend in the community, but my priorities lay with making my life center around the outdoors and respective adventures. (Hiking, camping, fresh air, etc.) I guess you could call me, “the passive raver.” Seems silly to proclaim your own identity in a scene, but it seems relatively accurate to me.
