It is clear that you both have found great success as solo artists in your respective careers, including a Grammy nomination for “In My Mind” and topping the charts with some of the most celebrated dance anthems to date. Can you tell us a little bit about the history that brought you together as L’Tric?
We are old friends from Melbourne, and have always helped each other out with various things over the years. I was in LA for a few days and suggested to Andy we jump in his studio. “This Feeling” was the result and very quickly we had deals on the table and thought, ok let’s do this. And L’Tric was born!
Your track called “This Feeling” is the production that put L’Tric on the map inspiring good vibes with a music video that is nothing short of infectious. As the producers behind the track, did you have creative control over the direction of the music video and what did that creative process look like?
The record company gave us a few sketch ideas from various film clip directors, and we chose the one that we felt best represented the track. In the end, we were very happy.
What started off as an instrumental piece called “The Beach” has been revamped into a groovy lyrical summer track called “The Way You Are”. What was your inspiration behind revisiting “The Beach” and adding a lyrical element? How did you choose LVL to be the featured lyricist on the track?
It was a track that Andy wrote, and we all felt it could be huge with the right vocal. We had a few singers try some ideas for it, but nothing really clicked until we heard “The way U R” from LVL. We all loved it and the response has been amazing.
Tell us a bit about the progressive house scene in Melbourne Australia. How has coming up in a dance music hot spot helped to direct your artistic vision as L’Tric?
I (Ivan) come from the old school progressive house scene. So DJ’s like Sasha were very influential to me and a lot of Melbourne crew which shaped my taste in house. Andy has always been a more disco and funky house oriented producer, so together we each bring different ideas to the table. We feel that helps define the L’Tric sound and keeps it interesting.
When you come together as L’Tric in the studio, what are some of the challenges you face when collaborating on new productions and how do you delegate the studio tasks between each other to make sure a L’Tric track stands apart from your solo work?
The main challenge is we are in different cities, so we do a lot of Skype sessions! Generally one will start a track and the other will finish it, but it varies depending on what’s required.
With only a handful of L’Tric productions circling the airwaves, fans are dying to know if this is an alliance that will stand the test of time. What is your vision for L’Tric’s future and do you plan on putting your solo work aside to focus on some more group work?
We are both 100% focused on L’Tric right now, but have the occasional solo singles dropping from time to time. The solo stuff is a bit different to the L’Tric sound, and as producers that keeps it interesting. We have a load of new songs in the pipeline and will have plenty of new releases as well as some remixes coming soon.
As artists who have been part of the scene for many years you have witnessed the ever evolving scene with new sub-genres of dance music popping up all over the globe at an increasing rate. Do you think trending genres will be able to sustain audiences allowing artists to maintain their original vision or will it be necessary to follow trends somewhat?
I think part of the biggest problem today is too many producers sounding alike. The best artists generally create their own sound. Like Duke Dumont, Deadmau5, Prydz, etc. I always tell young producers to create tracks that work on dancefloors, ut have something different to the rest. Try to stand out.
Who are some artists that you believe would complement L’Tric’s style, who you would love to collaborate with in the future and what are some of the challenges that come along with producing a great collaborative track with an artist that you haven’t worked with in the past?
We’re always looking for talented people to work with. Be they singers, songwriters, other producers, or whatever. Anyone we think that can add something, or take us off in an interesting direction. People like Duke Dumont, Claptone, or more underground artists like Weiss, who we’re big fans of right now. The main challenge you face is finding a good mid point with another artist, but we have always enjoyed the collaborative process.
Can L’Tric fans expect a tour this year and are there any major events that you have set your sights on that they can look forward to?
There will be some touring soon, and we have some major plans to do some big shows, but we’re still working on that at the moment. Stay tuned..
Finally, what are some of your favorite hobbies outside of the music realm that L’Tric fans may not know about and how do you spend your leisure time outside of the studio or club?
We are both huge foodies, so we cook and eat out at whatever hip new food joints we can find. Andy is based in LA, so when I am there he usually takes me out on a food tour to the latest hot spots. I love it! I also have a young family so I spend a lot of time with them.
