Leaving Laurel Releases New Instrumental Album, ‘our lives entwined’

Leaving Laurel channels the message of hope for new beginnings with the release of our live entwined, an album filled with nostalgic warmth and fresh instrumentation.

The story of Leaving Laurel has been filled with love, loss, introspection, and inspiration. Originally comprising Gordon Huntley and Pierce Fulton, the duo made a home on Anjunadeep, providing soundscapes that panged deep in listeners’ souls and showcased their unique lo-fi experimentation. After Fulton tragically passed away, Huntley has since taken the reins of the project to drive it into new territory while honoring his friend’s legacy. Now, the latest chapter of Leaving Laurel has opened with the release of our lives entwined.

While Leaving Laurel’s self-titled debut album and follow-up LP, when the quiet comes, were rooted in lo-fi experimentation, nostalgic warmth, and the exploration of loss, especially on the latter, this album embraces something new. Fresh instrumentation and synths flood the soundscapes on our lives entwined, marking a new era for the project as Huntley expresses his emotions after a period of rediscovery and joy. There’s a sense of renewal and growth throughout, and even flourishes of optimism, as the seconds tick away on each track.

The third chapter of Leaving Laurel’s story begins with “and the storm started,” a tune that suggests that, while there will be those warm, nostalgic elements throughout the album, there’s more that Huntley decided to dive into. Tracks like “her certain uncertainty” and “that feeling from before” continue that trend with melodies that tug at your heartstrings while uplifting the soul as the soundscape develops.

The chilled-out nature of “i: off the path,” blends so perfectly into the more dance-ready “ii: …into the night.” It’s a fantastic encapsulation of where Leaving Laurel was and where he’s heading next. Then, the final three tunes, capped off by the album’s title track, provide powerfully emotional moments that soothe the mind yet make the body want to move. It’s healing through and through, and the perfect album to play when you need a break from the world or a dose of positivity to brighten your day.
