Subtronics shows off his world-building abilities with the release of Fibonacci Part 1: Oblivion, the first of two EPs that will culminate in a new album.
It’s been an exciting year for Subtronics‘ biggest fans. The genre-blending bass maestro continues to reign supreme in the scene with headline festival appearances and his first-ever residency in Las Vegas, but that doesn’t mean he’s slowing down on the release front either. This past weekend at Ultra Music Festival, Subtronics revealed that a new EP was on the horizon, Fibonacci Part 1: Oblivion. Now, more details and the full EP have surfaced for everyone to feast their ears on.
Fibonacci Part 1: Oblivion clocks in at eight tracks and doubles as the first of two EPs that will converge to become his next studio album. Its name is rooted in the same mathematical realm as his previous two albums, FRACTALS and TESSERACT, with the number of tunes within this release perfectly fitting into the sequence that bears its name.
“Part 1 of the EP conveys that all of reality, in its complexity and grandeur, originates from nature and the fundamental laws of the universe,” Subtronics shared about the release. “It emphasizes the Fibonacci sequence and golden ratio as intrinsic patterns that govern nature, not through divine intervention, but through physics. Building on themes of alternate dimensions and fractals, the Fibonacci spiral is presented as the foundational DNA of reality.”
Intent on showcasing his storytelling abilities, each track acts as a chapter to progress listeners forward, all of which begins with the eerie intro on “Oblivion.” Once you’re blasted with the onslaught of bass on this one, you’re jettisoned into the hard-hitting “Mothclaws” before he slows everything down on “Brass Danger” and “Stratosphere.” Subtronics’ collaboration with Wooli, “Lock In,” is a tune that you’ll want to find the nearest rail while listening to, while “Final Breath” with A Little Sound toys with your mind with its trippy broken beat and vocals as this part comes to a close.
