1788-L turns up the drum and bass heat while staying true to his industrial sound on his latest Nu-Type Vol. 1 EP, out now via HypnoVizion.
1788-L is well known for his distinctive dark midtempo sound, which ushers listeners into a futuristic world of automation and glitchy bass beats. Early fan favorites, like 2018’s “Destiny” with Blanke and “H E X” with Rezz, captured the hearts of fans while making a massive statement for the 1788-L project. Once anonymous, the artist unmasked himself just last year ahead of his debut album, ALPHA+, and hasn’t looked back.
Now, the follow-up to ALPHA+ is here, coming in the form of a four-track EP. Nu-Type Vol. 1, out via HypnoVizion, navigates a different side of 1788-L as the producer charts territory in drum and bass. Previously exploring the genre on 2022’s “Baseline Test,” this collection of tunes is a headfirst dive into gritty genre-bending sounds that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
The EP beckons listeners with “WARTYPE,” an intense collaboration with fellow producer Quackson that ushers in the new 1788-L era. Ominous tones greet fans, prompting them to question whether they’re prepared for the road ahead. The powerful buildup culminates in a ground-shaking drop that complements both artists’ musical styles. Returning for round two, “WARTYPE” concludes with a serving of drum and bass that does not mess around, solidifying 1788-L’s take on the genre.
“WASP.exe” packs a serious punch, with vibrant bass stings echoing throughout its runtime. Flute-like notes are intertwined with floor-shaking percussion as we weave seamlessly through dubstep and drum and bass. “NANOBLADE” takes us deeper in the realm, combining raucous chords that vibrate among aggressive vocal undertones for a true dnb delight sure to please enthusiasts.
Finally, “PRISMTECH” winds things down, offering a laidback spin on the cataclysmic bass notes that came prior. This is the perfect chance for listeners to collect themselves after the hard-hitting rollercoaster they’ve just experienced, yet it still leaves us yearning for more.
1788-L’s Nu-Type Vol. 1 EP successfully traverses bass styles from midtempo to trap, dubstep, and drum and bass. The faster rhythms of drum and bass add a new sector to the 1788-L sound, prompting an exciting time for fans as this new side of him is fully unlocked. If this EP is just a glimpse into what lies ahead for the artist, we’ll be patiently waiting for our next dose of 1788-L.
