Prolific electronic music producer Scuba channels his love for old-school rave styles on his latest Digital Underground mixtape, D:U:2, on Hotflush.

From groundbreaking productions and massive live shows to heading up Hotflush and hosting a podcast, Scuba has seemingly done it all over the past two decades in the electronic music scene. This UK-based legend has left a lasting impression over the years, backed by high-quality albums and other creative endeavors. His latest adventure, the Digital Underground mixtape series, sees him honor the past while having some fun along the way.

The first mixtape in this series arrived last year, acting as a creative outlet for Scuba, who was experiencing burnout from a challenging film score project during the pandemic. Since then, he’s channeled the sounds of the days of raves gone by and found a renewed passion for the scene along the way, culminating in the second volume in the series, D:U:2.

“This is the second part of a series started last year which explores the classic era of hardcore, which is one of my absolute favourite periods of dance music history,” Scuba said. “It’s been a lot of fun to put together and the second mixtape gets into some of the themes that we didn’t delve too deeply into on the first one, so it’s a great way to continue.”

The 12 tracks on D:U:2 feature a hearty helping of rave-fueled soundscapes. “Saturday” leads listeners in with layers of vocal samples taken from news reports about raves and acid house before diving straight into a breakbeat that delivers energy straight into your soul. As you dive into the past on tracks like “U Never See,” “Sorry,” “Forever,” and “Riding Hi,” you’re met with elements of acid house, jungle, techno, and hardcore that were prominent during the early days of the rave.

While all of the tunes on D:U:2 are masterfully crafted, a few stand tall. “Pill Press” delivers a blend of techno grooves with intoxicating piano chords and “Storms Of Love” powers forward with deep bass and a punchy breakbeat that will hit you right in your core. The closing track, “Truth,” is also a stunner with its vocals, breaks, and more that will leave ravers spinning on any dancefloor.

Listen to the tunes on D:U:2 by streaming the mixtape on Spotify or your preferred platform, and follow Scuba for more releases to come!
