Spag Ruckus Releases Debut Solo Album, 'Ghosts Of Perversion'

Ghosts Of Perversion is a glimpse into the creative mind of Spag Ruckus as he shows off his passion for experimenting with different genres and styles.

Those familiar with the bass music scene might know the name Thomas Desbouvrie for the work he created as a founding member of the French group Dirtyphonics, but there’s so much more to explore from this maestro. For 25 years, he has expressed his creativity in music, but that’s just one aspect of his artistry as he’s an accomplished painter, graphic designer, and published poet, which he focused on as he embraced a new alias, Matheo de Bruvisso. Yet in 2022, there was an itch he needed to scratch musically. With that, Spag Ruckus was born.

“My aim with Spag Ruckus is to experiment without a format, to feel free to do what I like. I want to explore unexpected structures, weird ideas, bizarre melodies and ambiances, have fun and surprise myself,” Desbouvrie shared about the project. “As much in my painting, my poetry as in my music, I like to see two antagonistic forces confront each other, the cosmos and chaos, and play in this conflicting space where life takes shape.”

The past two years have seen the beginning of Spag Ruckus’ story unfold. Early releases like “Hypnos,” “Autopanic” with Regal Standard, and “The Last Drop of Oil” helped set the tone for his avant-garde style. Others, like this year’s Techno Jungle Ravers EP, have opened the doors even wider to the dynamic soundscapes, often driven by modular synths, that he intends to bring to the scene with this project. Now, Spag Ruckus has dropped off his latest body of work, his first solo album, Ghosts Of Perversion.

Found inside Ghosts Of Perversion is a mixed bag of Spag Ruckus’ biggest influences. You’ll find touches of electro-rock on the aforementioned “Autopanic,” a twist of jazz on “The Pledge,” and a cinematic soundscape on “Le Duel.” That doesn’t mean that he’s drifted too far out of the bass realm, though. Impressive tunes like “Hypnos,” “Resistance,” “Assassin,” and the eerie and frenetic “Embracing Monsters” prove he’s still firmly rooted in that side of the sonic spectrum. This album acts as a love letter to experimentation in the electronic realm from Spag Ruckus, and it’s safe to say that the future is bright for this maestro as he continues his exploration.
